WD Advanced Format technology increases media format efficiency, thus enabling larger drive capacities. WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. WD Advanced Format drives work with legacy operating systems such as Windows XP but require the use of the free WD Align software available on www.wdc.com/advformat. Available in capacities up to 2 TB, WD Caviar® Green™ SATA hard drives reduce power consumption by up to 40% and offer best-in-class acoustics and operating temperature. Based on WD’s exclusive GreenPower™ technology, these drives are designed to deliver power savings as the primary attribute. As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. They are ideal for PCs, external storage and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation. more info

GARBAGE
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE – GARBAGE. WE PURCHASED 3 OF THESE. 2 ARE DEAD AND THE 1 RUNNING IS RUNNING HOT.

THESE DRIVES ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS XP — THEY RUN THE “NEW” 4KB PHYSICAL SECTOR JUNK. SUPPOSED TO “FASTER” – YEAH, RIGHT. WE PURCHASED A HITACHI 1 TB FROM ANAZON AND IT RUNS JUST A FAST AS THIS PIECE OF JUNK. WESTERN DIGITAL IS IN BED WITH MICROSOFT – DESIGNED DRIVES TO WORK ONLY ON WINDOWS 7 (ANOTHER PIECE OF GARBAGE OF AN OS). COMPANIES SHOULD MAKE DRIVES TO WORK ON THE MAJORITY OF THE WORLD’S COMPUTERS – NOT THE MINORITY – AND WINDOWS 7 RUNS (AT THIS WRITING) ON 23 PER CENT OF WORLD’S COMPUTER VS. XP’S 43 PER CENT). WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER WESTERN DIGITAL PRODUCT AGAIN. WE HAVE TAKEN THEM OFF OUR PURCHASING ORDERS. IF YOU WANT THIS JUNK TO RUN ON WINDOWS XP YOU WILL NEED TO REPROGRAM THE DISK THROUGH SETUP, OR MANUALLY CAP JUMPERS 7 AND 8 IN ORDER FOR YOUR XP MACHINE TO “SEE” IT. PIECE OF JUNK

WESTERN DIGITAL IS A MICROSOFT PUPPET.

It was a good buy

The hard drive was shipped quickly and I have no problems. Always keep in mind that the warranty period is 2 to 3 years and its more than worth it.

XP and WHS users approach with caution
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For those of you with WHS and XP,approach with caution. The new advanced format, which changes the sector size of the drive, misaligns the drive when running on any OS before Vista. Microsoft says they are working with Western Digital on the issue in WHS. Until then, you must use the jumper on the drive. It does not come in the package. You can install the WDalign app or use the .iso file and burn it to CD. I recommend the .iso because you do not have to hack the .exe on WHS or spend hours aligning the drive(due to Windows interfering in the process). The drive performs reliably and works great. It is low-power,so I conserve energy. I typically have transfer rates of 50 to 60 Mb/s with this drive, with writing and read rates about the same. That 64 MB cache comes in handy.

XP users be careful
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The drive does not come with jumpers. OEM drives don’t have screws or software, but since jumpers are required to use the drive as advertised with XP (there is even a note on the drive’s non-static packinging to use a jumper with XP), they should be included.

Western-Digital did send me jumpers and agreed with my position, but has no plans to include jumpers in the future. Be careful you know the limitations before purchasing, specifically you can’t use the drive as shipped with XP without an additional purchase or acquisition of a jumper at a repair-shop.

Garbage Read/Write
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Bought this drive from a Gold Box Deal, and I’m pissed. I was going to use this as my main HDD for recording on Media Center. But the read/write times make it impossible to watch a program. It constantly stutters dropping frames and audio so that you miss 3/4 of the show. I’m going to end up keeping the drive and putting it in an external enclosure as a backup, and getting a new drive to record my media.

Not all-inclusive shipping from Amazon
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is exactly what it says it is. I don’t normally write reviews very often, but if you order this directly from Amazon, be aware that you get ONLY the hard drive. It arrived in a plastic type of wrapping with no Western Digital box like you’d get if you bought it at the store. It did not include a data cable, or even hard drive screws used to install in the computer. So if you get this shipped from Amazon directly, just be aware you will probably have to get those items separately if you need them.

Reliable storage for your precious images
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am a photographer and I like to store all my raw images on external raw drives as well as on my Network Accessible Storage (NAS) system. I have bought dozens of drives from various vendors but have standardized on the WD green drives.

Inexpensive, cool, quiet and reliable; can’t get better than that.

It is really nice to leave the dark ages with boxes of glassine sleeves storing the only copy of those special images.

I am now buying the 2 TB versions for storing the VHS and DVD’s. NO problems.

DO NOT USE AS A RAID 1 DRIVE
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
None of the Cavier Green drives should be used for a RAID 1 installation. If you don’t believe me check out TLER in Wikipedia. In anycase I have first hand experience (bad) trying to use two of these in a brand new Windows 7 Professional computer. The computer crashed 5 times to blue screen of death within 24 hours. I constantly got a REBUILD message from my boot screen. Within 3 days (and many blue screens later) the 2nd RAID drive stopped working. I then searched the internet and found many references to the fact that this drive should not be used for a RAID. I replaced both drives with SEAGATE BARACUDAs …. no problems…..no blue screens of death…. flawless RAID 1 performance. BTW if you install a RAID 1 or have someone else install it I highly recommend downloading Intel’s MATRIX STORAGE CONSOLE to see what is going on.

Quiet
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The I bought this drive for my Shuttle SG41J1 Plus and it runs very quietly. Usually, you can hear a drive while it is being accessed. It helps that this also has a 64MB cache, so it does appear to run a little faster too.

Should have better instruction for windows 7
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Bought this hard disk. It worked as described. If I knew how to do it, installation should be straightforward. I installed hard disk on other systems. You plug it in and do not need to do anything. For windows 7, I installed the hard disk and could not find it anywhere in windows explorer. You have to use disk management tool to format / partition the installed hard drive first before you see it

It’s a hard drive, it works
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m using two of these drives in a Drobo 4-Bay enclosure. It’s sitting in a closet attached to one of my servers, so I can’t comment on noise levels. They’ve been working for a month or so now without any hiccups, and in my experience if a hard drive is going to have problems it will either have them right away or run for years. I realize that isn’t always the case, but so far it’s been my experience.

WD Green SATA
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
El disco es muy lento, deberían indicar en las características que la mayoría del tiempo funciona a 5400RPM y que no se recomienda utilizarlo como disco principal.

Wartooth November 8, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Works great. For storage only.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This drive is only 5400 RPMs. If you are video or music editing (or anything else equally intensive), you will need a drive that is 7200 RPM’s or higher. I found out the hard way. These large drives are great for storage or backup.

Big and quiet
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Loads of space and fairly quick. I have not had any problems since I installed a pair in a RAID1 mirror a month ago.
