Size: great, Software: frustrating

This little drive has great capacity, but to use it effectively, you need the software to work right. I’ve ben *trying* to use it with a Win7 machine for over a week and the software is slow to respond to mouse clicks, frequently gets hung and doesn’t respond at all. The icons are confusing, too and the online help is, well, not much help. So far, it tells me the status of the simple File and Folder backup is “never backed up”, despite several tries. Every time I start up the software, the status report says “Backups did not run” (even after manually trying to start the backup); checking the log file just reveals errors. It does indicate that it did a Complete System Backup, but again, the status says “Backups did not run”. I can’t trust that the backups are working, so the drive is worthless.
I like this drive.

Ease to use, & somewhat fast for a compact drive,
But, use windows commander instead of the backup software included.

Love it! It’s smaller than my other one of a different brand. I’m a trainer, I keep this portable hard drive in my handbag and can do a training in a moments notice. It holds a wealth of videos, powerpoints and handouts not to mention thousands of photos and it doesn’t seem like I can fill it up, I tried. It’s so convenient, I bought a second one so I can separate my work material from my personal photo’s and video’s but I carry both with me. The best investment…

Good product but no product support from Toshiba

I bought this for a Mac. it will not work with a Mac unless re-formatted but nothing in the provided instructions or the website mentions this.
My 4 emails to the Toshiba website have gone unanswered for 2 weeks now {Toyota like arrogance it would seem} GRRrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Just how hard would that have been to do.
I finally found on an Apple forum that to reformat any portable drive for a Mac go to Disk Utilities. I did this for the Canvio and it took less than a minute.
Now works fine.
Great harddrive

I bought this drive to go with my PS3. I reformatted it to FAT32 and loaded it full of movies and music, and it works wonderfully. It loads very fast and the movies play seemlessly.
I paid 115 with newegg, awesome 1 tb.

i opened one of the three i got . open carefully from the top across from the usb port. sata drive 1 tb toshiba. if you are good with usb and not esata, the case is skin tight on the drive and fits perfect in the WD case that is designed for smaller WD external drive.
I need more of these…

I completely ADORE this hard drive. I’m the kind of person that needs quite a few externals around… I like to have my stuff backed up, and I have enough data that 1 TB won’t even hold what I’ve got. This was cheap and tiny, so I bought one for a friend and one for myself. I LOVE it.
I have had no problems at all. It works just fine on PC or Mac.
The only thing (and this is a complaint. Just a side note) that I could consider a slight negative of this product (which probably won’t even matter to most) is that the drive is very securely in the case. If you wanted to be able to take it out to put it into something else (a laptop, ps3, etc), you would have to break the case to do so.
I would most definitely recommend this. It’s an amazing amount of storage on a tiny drive for an amazing price. I know that I am most certainly get me some more of these lovely things…
Good, but problem with “unique” USB cable?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Just got this 500G Canvio. Borat will say “it is nice”.
It comes with a standard USB cable with a mini connector(at least it looks like this). The cable is not retractable and I do not need one more cable intestinally entangled on my desk. I have SIX identical retractable cables with the same mini connector. None works with this Canvio model. It looks like toshiba makes its own brand of the cable with secret specific electrical requirements, so if you loose it you should buy only from them? It is hard to believe, but this does not help me to use retractable cables. Mildly to medium unhappy.
Good Value for Money – But Needs Reformatting for Mac

As of June 2010, this Toshiba is the best value for money amongst 1 Tb portable hard drives. The competition includes Western Digital My Passport SE for Mac 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBABW0010BSL-NESN (Silver) and Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100 (Black) both of which are more expensive than Toshiba Canvio.
Out of the box, it comes as NTFS formatted drive and works only on Windows computers. It even comes with Windows backup software, which I have not used.
For just Mac use, you have to reformat the hard drive as Mac OS Extended (case Sensitive Journaled). Once reformatted, it works flawlessly as an external drive or time machine.
Here is the formatting summary:
FOR WINDOWS ONLY USE – format as NTFS – the format it comes in.
FOR BOTH WINDOWS & MAC USE -format it as MS DOS (Fat 32) but then it does not work as a Time Machine.
TO USE AS MAC ONLY & TIME MACHINE – format as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) – which does not work in Windows.
It is small, sleek, light, quiet and as of June 2010 the biggest capacity portable USB drive. Over the years I have used numerous portable hard drives, most of them Western Digital, and they all worked well; only one Fantom hard drive died. This is my first Toshiba hard drive and I have not used this Toshiba Canvio long enough to comment on its longevity but it seems to be functioning well and as of now it is the best value for money.
Drive worth having
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is the first Toshiba drive I have tried. Transfer speed is what I expect from USB 2.0, 30-35MB/s sustained write. It is comparable to the other USB 2.0 hard drives I have from WD.
I don’t use the software that comes with the drive, so I cannot make any comments one way or the other about that.
I recommend care in handling – it is a hard drive after all.
Toshiba External Hard Drive

Wow! This drive is awesome. Tiny but with a huge capacity and it’s fast. I **really** like it. Only thing I had to do to make it bootable on a Mac was to change the formatting to GUID. Excellent seller, good price and fast shipping make this a super deal.
Nice, new model
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the previous version of the Toshiba portable hard drives, and this model makes nice improvements. The case is smaller with textured rubber all along the edges. Also, this drives gets recognized faster than the previous Toshiba models, and data transfer seems faster, though I haven’t done any concrete tests. The colors are more appealing to me.
The only thing I don’t like, which others may or may not agree with, is that the LED light indicating power and activity is much, much brighter than the previous model. The previous model was a small, dimly lit dot, and this model has a larger rectangular LED that’s annoying. I won’t detract any stars from that because it’s very fixable with a small bit of electrical tape.
Overall, this is a very good purchase.
Small price, large capacity

931GB formatted capacity. Fairly fast for and external drive. No auto install backup software. Standard USB cable. Small size. Runs cool. What more could you ask for?
Good Value

Just received this and was disappointed that the pre-loaded backup software is only for Windows. My operating system is Ubuntu, a version of Linux, so when I read on the box that the hard drive is only compatible with Windows I was concerned. I plugged it in and my system could identify the external drive and write to the disc using drag-and-drop. There was no drama getting it to work. It would presumably be even easier to use in a Windows environment.
Really, the description of the product should have specified the limited compatibility, but that is no reflection on the product.
Nice things come in small packages! The rubber edges give confidence that it is rugged. It’s fast and quiet. An LED lets you know what it is doing. The unit is wonderfully compact although the USB cable is a bit short.
