Great product for the money. Rating:5 out of 5 stars This blu-ray player works as promised. Though it does not have all of the bells and whistles of some of the other models out there, it is priced at less than 50% of the cost of the competition. Set-up was simple, and picture quality is excellent. As far as load time, I cannot comment a great deal. This is my first blu-ray player, but I can say that the limited number of disks that I have watched thus far have loaded in less than one minute. It does take a few seconds to power up or down. Again, I don’t have much to compare it to. I updated the firmware without any problems. The process is pretty easy. Just visit the Funai website (actual manufacturer of the player, as well as manufacturer of products for some of the following brands: Symphonic, Sylvania, Emerson, Aventura, Durabrand, ESA, Magnavox, INSIGNIA, and Misakai),copy appropriate firmware to a disk, and follow onscreen directions. Detailed directions were given at the website. I haven’t had reason to contact customer support thus far, so I cannot speak to what that experience may be like. In summary, good basic blu-ray player for an excellent price. No complaints here. I will be purchasing another in the near future.
Did not hold up even with gentle care. Rating:1 out of 5 stars I bought this unit in Oct 2008, It gets used maybe once a week in a clean adult only home. The unit died yesterday Aug 2009 with no apparent cause. It says Hello on the front but does nothing else. Will not respond to any commands on the remote or the unit itself. The warranty is 90 days labor and 1 year parts. As you might imagine, the labor is much more than the parts. To pay for shipping and the labor is more expensive than buying a new Magnavox Blue Ray at Walmart ($148). It’s a shame, but whatcha gonna do…. except warn others. Best of luck. dm
Great starter blu ray player Rating:5 out of 5 stars Got this a few weeks ago as the daily special-$130, seemed too reasonable to pass up. Wasn’t willing to shell out over $200. Have only watched a few movies, but blu ray definitely is crystal clear. As many have said, regular dvds upconvert to almost blu ray quality, and you pay almost this much for an upconverting player. Load time is fine, also have an HD dvd player, both take about 20 seconds. What’s the big deal? Haven’t downloaded firmware yet, may wait to see if certain movies cause problems, as I’ve read some had problems after downloading firmware. Overall, a great purchase!
Slightly annoying, not clearly better than normal DVD player Rating:3 out of 5 stars This Blu-ray player has enough annoyances with it to make it not a clear win over our old DVD player it replaced. The quality of Blu-ray video is higher, but the difference is subtle, so it really is only a modest gain. Unfortunately, there are minor usablility annoyances that, at least for us, make us question whether it was really worth this upgrade to Blu-ray.
For example, one annoyance is that the Blu-ray player takes quite a while to turn on. From the time you hit the power button (or the eject button to get out a disk when it is off) to the time it responds is about 15-30 seconds. If feels like you are booting up a computer, not the instant on that I expect from a DVD player.
Another annoyance is that the remote is bulky and ugly. Again, not a huge deal, but it makes the experience less pleasant than it was with our old DVD player.
A third minor issue is that the unit puts out a fair amount of heat, much more than a DVD player. A fourth is that the player sometimes hangs for a couple seconds during playback of a movie (though usually not more than once or twice in one film).
It is not clear that any of these issues are particular to this Blu-ray player instead of a problem common to all Blu-ray players. But, for people like us, who were pretty happy with our old DVD player and spent the money to upgrade to Blu-ray expecting it to be a clear win, it is a disappointment.
Great Value! Rating:5 out of 5 stars The only con I can say about this product is that it takes about a full minute to load up when powering on. Although, to me, if someone cannot spare a MINUTE of their time for startup, they shouldn’t be watching a movie anyway.
Other than that, it is sleek and high-end looking as well as great picture & sound quality. You’re not going to find a better value on a Blu-Ray/DVD player.
Works great until it breaks Rating:1 out of 5 stars I bought this player last Christmas and loved it, particularly the feature that upconverted my standard DVDs to near blu-ray quality. I immediately set about building a substantial – and costly – blu-ray collection. However several weeks ago the unit simply stopped working for no apparent reason. It makes a clicking noise as soon as it is turned on, and spits out every DVD or CD that I insert. It might be a problem with the motor, but who knows? I had already give away my old DVD/CD player, so I am left with a big movie/music collection that I can’t enjoy. It took weeks to finally get a response from the manufacturer (FUNAI) who told me I would have to send the player to Ohio for repair, and pay for labor & shipment costs. This will probably run about 80 bucks, almost half of what I originally paid. I’ll be shopping for a Samsung instead.
Sylvania NB500SL9 Rating:5 out of 5 stars This is a great Blu-ray disc player.I ordered it from Amazon and recieved it a few days later. It was Very easy to hook up and watch. The load time is not bad at all, just a minute or so.Movies look great and all this for a great low price.I would recomend it to anyone who is looking into getting a Blu-ray player and not wanting to spend a fortune.
Works great but added firmware update Rating:4 out of 5 stars This was sort of an impulse purchase. I had done considerable research and then found this Sylvania on Amazon. After noting the the writeup on Consumer Reports mag. I decided this might be a good deal. I received it sooner than they said and tried it immediately. After setting it up,which took a few minutes,I played a Blu-Ray disc and was quite pleased with the job it did. I noted there was a firmwear update for this product so I downloaded and installed the update and everything is great. I would recommend this item very highly and would make the purchase again.
SYLVANIA BLU RAY PLAYER Rating:5 out of 5 stars FOR THAT PRICE….JUST A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE AND A WELL BUILT MACHINE. IT WAS A GOOD AMAZON EXPERIENCE, WELL PACKED AND HDMI CABLE INCLUDED, PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND NO TAX!!!!…JUST GREAT FOR A $159.00 PRICE.
great blue ray Rating:5 out of 5 stars It has a short load time of only 30-35 seoonds which is short for a blue ray. It is an easy setup and will automatically configure to most tv’s information. I have been really happy and have not had any issues. I have had this for over a month and have played multiple movies on it both blue ray and regular which looks so much better through this player.
Extremely Pleased Rating:5 out of 5 stars I purchased this player when it was an Amazon daily deal for about 35% off of the current price. We have used it to play a brand new blue-ray movie as well as an old favorite movie, circa 1987. The quality of the picture was superior to anything we have used, including our PS3, when playing movies on our 46″ Samsung LN46A750. What I love most about the player is convenience. It will play any DVD we own, so we no longer have to switch between the xbox 360 and PS3 depending upon a particular format. We’re delighted with this purchase.
I love it! Rating:5 out of 5 stars I got this Blu-ray in a Lightning Deal and love it! With such a great price, I was concerned it wouldn’t be that great. It is fabulous! The most beautiful picture ever!
problematic – returned for refund Rating:1 out of 5 stars not sure how this got so many good reviews. i too bought this for only $129. regular dvds sometimes froze sometimes didnt. i put in a blu ray disc and it wouldn’t play. then i updated the firmware as directed. after i removed the disc that contained the firmware, i unplugged the player as directed and then plugged it in and turned it on. then i press open…the open word appeared on the player but the tray wouldnt open…then i pressed close and nothing…then open and nothing…after an hour of trouble shooting, i returned this hunk of junk. i’ll wait for christmas time when many better players will be in this price range.
Great product Rating:5 out of 5 stars It is easy to hook up and does everything I want. It plays the DVD and Blu-ray Discs well. Since it plays DVDs, you don’t have to replace them with Blu-ray, unless you want to.
Don’t think about buying this Rating:1 out of 5 stars The player worked fine for about two months. Then I put a Netflix blu ray disc in and got “Disc Error: Playback feature may not be available on this disc.” I tried a regular DVD disk and it worked fine. So I reported a disk problem to Netflix and received a message that some DVD players cannot play new disks until software has been upgraded. So… I followed the software upgrade instructions at the Funai customer service site, discovered that I should upgrade immediately, and then successfully did the upgrade (every step was followed and the version check reads that I now have the latest version). The blu ray DVD still would not work so I figured it is a bad disk. To test this, I inserted another blu ray disc and got the same error. It still plays regular DVDs so I spent a lot of money to have standard DVD player. Nice waste of a couple of hours. I’ll ask Santa for a Samsung.
