The 7.2-Megapixel Cyber-shot(R) W120 features innovative Smile Shutter technology, which photographs smiles as they happen. A Carl Zeiss 4x optical zoom lens provides high quality close-ups, while Sony’s Double Anti-Blur solution gives you crisp, clear images. The advanced Sony Super HAD(TM) (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, a 9-point auto focus measures the focus at 9 precision points instead of 5 giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image. The large, bright 2.5 TFT LCD display makes it easy to compose shots, check results, and read menus in sharp natural color, even in bright sunlight. Face Detection technology automatically controls focus, exposure, color, and flash to help reveal faces in shadows, make skin tones look more natural, reduce red-eye, and eliminate harsh facial glare, so your photos bring out every expression on every face in every shot. Super SteadyShot(R) Image Stabilization compensates for shaky hands and minimizes blur with optical sensors that detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens. For great stills and movies, and simple use, the Sony DSC-W120 is a great, all-around camera. Shutter Speed – Auto (1/4 – 1/1,600) / Program Auto (1 – 1/1,600) Flash Modes – Auto, Forced On, Forced Off, and Slow Synch Movie Modes – MPEG VX Fine with Audio (640×480 at 30fps), MPEG VX Standard with Audio (640×480 at 16fps), Presentation (320 x 240 at 8fps) Scene Modes – Auto, Easy Shooting, Program Auto, Movie, High Sensitivity, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, and Smile Shutter Operating System – Microsoft 2000 Professional, Me, XP Home and Professional, Macintosh OS 9.1, 9.2, OS X (10.0-10.4) more info

At least it was CHEAP

We wanted a simple point and shoot camera to get snaps of the grandkids. It had to be easy to operate, we don’t have time to be messing with menus and adjustments. I have an old Fuji 2600, an 8-year old 2MP camera, that has done a good job, but lately has been showing its age.

I read a few professional reviews that said the DSC-W120 had better-than-average shutter lag for a pocket camera. With that, and a good price, we bought the Sony, and we’ve used it for about 10 months.

When operating indoors using the flash, the camera is way slow, even with the red-eye OFF, the flash set to always ON, and the camera pre-focused (shutter button pressed halfway). There is still a long delay before the image is captured. By that time the subject has moved or the expression is gone.

I’ve read other reviews where they use the burst mode to overcome this problem, but that doesn’t work for flash photography.

The W120 has better low-light performance than my Fuji, but only because of the ability to push the ISO setting and the AF-assist light. But the Sony is no better for indoor pictures, unless the subject is still.

The Sony has many more bells and whistles, some of which work. The face recognition works. The smile detection works only occasionally.

Outdoors, the camera performs pretty well, as expected with a 7.2MP imaging chip. But I was still disappointed with the speed, as it was little or no improvement over my old camera.

In summary:

Pros:

-Inexpensive

-Lots of controls for those who need them

-Good for still portraits

-Battery life, good for more than 100 shots with about 50% using flash

Cons:

-Very slow shutter lag when used with flash

Overall, this camera has been disappointing. Even with all of the features, the slow shutter lag is a real show-stopper. With so many advances in the technology, there must be a point & shoot that is faster than this.

worse than average

It makes decent pictures in daylight but the night shots and the shots make in artificial light this camera cannot handle at all. Also the battery severely handicaps the performance of this camera, it is extremely weak and you will surely miss all your good shots if you need to make them quickly.

Great gift for mom

Purchased as a birthday gift for mom, along with the Sony MSMT4G memory stick and the Sony LCS-CST soft case to protect it. She loves it. Easy to use, great pictures, and good looks.

I love sony but I hate this camera

I got this camera because I love my DSc-S85 cybershot that I got about 8 years ago. What a let down this new cybershot has been. It’s really hard to to take anything but still-life shots without blur. I missed so many wonderful photos because of this. To top off my frustrations, the thing just quite working after about 4 months. One day when I turned it on, the lens popped in and out a few times, then I got an error message saying to turn the camera off and on again. It did this over and over again, and I’ve never been able to use the camera since. LAME.

Handy Little Gem

It’s small, it’s easy to use, the battery is rechargeable, the pictures are great. What more could you want? There are all the features you’d expect from a moderately priced camera, and if you don’t want to use the features, it’s easy to ignore them. No problem with battery life, or inserting or removing the memory stick. It fits in my purse, so I’m likely to have it along when I need it. The instruction manual is even easy to use. And it has good Sony optics. Great camera!

Perfect Pocket Camera

We have had several of this model camera and all have performed well. However, the newer Sony models do not have a viewfinder which means that photographers can’t see in bright light. It seems that after this camera, we will need to purchase a Canon.

Blurry Pictures
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
We spent tons of time to replace our old Sony digital camera, which we bought in 2001. Our old Sony was one of the first 3MP digital camera. It took great pictures. It got a bit too big to carry around. After reading all the raving reviews, we bought this W120.

The pictures turn out to be horrible. Only one out of 10 turns out sharp and crisp, the rest are garbage. We just had our first child, so we thought this camera would allow us to capture a child who doesn’t sit still. Yeah right. Most pictures came out blurry because the camera doesn’t snap at the right time. We had to turn off all the special features to get better chance in capturing a useable picture.

The only pro is that this is a small camera. But what good is it if it can’t take good pictures?

Great Camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I love this Camera, but it’s zoom is…. less than expected. This camera has many features, but my family also has a Kodak Z812, and I prefer that camera.

This camera is perfect for talking pictures of family and friends on a trip or just to carry around in a bag or something like that, but I am more interested in photography, and I bought this camera to have my own pictures on my own camera, but this camera doesn’t really work for that. It does have one feature that the Kodak doesn’t have and it has the ability to turn off autofocus. I really like this, because sometimes, when taking up close shots, the camera autofocuses on the farther object, not the object i want it to.

Anyways, this is a very good camera. If you are looking for a camera for photography, check out the Kodak Z1012, or so, they are fairly inexpensive, and are great cameras, but if this is a camera for personal pictures of family and friends, then this is a great camera you should definitely consider buying.

This is a GREAT little camera! I have had it for about a year now and I carry it with me everywhere. It is cute and fits in my purse. Light enuf to carry on my wrist. The pictures snap quick. Great focus. NO BLUR! Excellent action shots. Crisp & clean. Great pics in dim light too! Nice movie feature. I would not trade this camera for anything. I have not a single complaint and I hope it lasts FOREVER! Oh and i dropped it this weekend … dropped it HARD on a concrete floor .. barely a knick in it and no issues.
