Love it

I was hesitant to buy this laptop at first because of some complaints about the charger, I am very happy that I did. The computer is quite fast and the battery is amazing. The price isn’t bad, either. I love it. There are a few draw backs, though. I can’t find a computer that doesn’t come with them. The touch pad randomly clicks on things that I don’t want it to. Also, The technical is full of idiots. I spent 2 hours on the phone trying to get them to fix a problem with my computer (the software disappeared). The computer came with a recovery cd (it doesn’t even play CDs- see what I mean?) that wouldn’t fix the problem. They advised me to completely erase my computer using a back up drive. I said no and they told me they couldn’t do anything. An hour later I figured out how to do it myself. Because the screen is so small in order to get the standard 1024x 768 display without having to scroll the normal screen the screen has to be “smashed” so the display is slightly altered. I have not had any problems with the charger, though.
A BAD CHOICE!

DON’T DO IT! CHEAP PARTS AND MISERABLE WARRANTY SERVICE!
Purchased this E-Book in mid-August ’09. Within days the AC Adapter/Charger failed. It has been more than SEVEN WEEKS since ASUS assured me that a replacement Adapter is on the way. Still no adapter and not even a promise of when I might get the replacement part…just a big dark-screen paperweight. (On a positive note – they do allow you to upgrade to EXPRESS SHIPPING for a small fee…which I already paid)
Great netbook, bad power supply
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The ASUS 1005HA is great and have found it to be everything it was advertised to be, until today. I’ve had the netbook for 30 days. I plugged the netbook in this morning to charge it up and the power supply is dead. I’ve searched Amazon and other web sites to see if a power supply can be purchased seperately and finding power supplies for every ASUS model but the 1005HA. Unless Amazon can send me a new power supply, I’ll be sending the netbook back for a refund
Seriously Lacking… Crashes Often.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this netbook for 3 months, I had to send it in after I’d get the blue screen or random crashes when running Skype or multi-tabbed browsing. ASUS replaced the hard drive, sent it back and still the same problem.
So this netbook is only for light browsing and no decent work. Don’t expect to browse the web and run microsoft word. Don’t expect to use skype… the video quality is bad, but it will also crash your laptop. Don’t expect to use the super hybrid engine… also crashes the computer.
Sadly, I do not recommend this product. I am disappointed because I had such high expectations… and reasonable ones (like skyping with my friends and family while I travel).
I’ll start with the pros:
Looks good
light weight
excellent battery life
comfortable
Cons:
Webcam is poor quality
Screen resolution limiting (same as other netbooks)
crashes when put to work. (I.e. not good for Skype)
Power Supply Issues? Read this!!

If you’ve scoured the web for reviews on this baby then you’ll know all the pros and cons, so I won’t repeat them here. The pros in fact do outweigh the cons by miles, but there is one ugly con that stands out. Here, I’ll tell you how I dealt with it.
The power supply DOES get red hot. Fortunately, since I was forewarned, I did the following:
1. When you start it up for the first time, leave it plugged in ONLY as long as it takes for the battery to charge to full.
2. Once it’s charged, disconnected the charger from your computer AND from the wall outlet.
3. Let it discharge to lower than 10%, then immediately reconnect the charger and charge it to full again. At this point, it is normal for the adapter to become very, very hot while charging all the way from low battery. So help it charge faster by keeping the display turned off or dimmed.
4. Repeat this charge/discharge cycle several times. If you want to use the netbook badly, try to incorporate your daily schedule into it so that it gets complete charge/discharge cycles.
If you follow these instructions for several battery cycles, you should find that the charger eventually stops overheating. My guess is that some of the electronic components used in the adapter are slightly off-spec, and those components need to “adapt” to the strain put on them.
My charger would get red hot at first, but now after following this procedure I can leave it plugged in for days without problems.
Bad LCD Screen
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My netbook just arrived. I fired it up and out of the box it has a vertical red line on the LCD screen. Now I need to go threw the trouble of retuning it and returning the extra memory. Amazon must be having problems with this product because they do not have replacements and have stopped shipping it. I needed this for a business trip because my full size laptop needs service.
I am replacing this with the Toshiba Mini NB205-N210 10.1
ASUS Eee Netbook is great value for the money
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I researched a lot of netbooks and tried about 10 different ones (at local electronics stores, Wal Mart, etc) before settling on the ASUS netbook. I am not extremely technical but I knew that I wanted something that “fit” and was comfortable to use, in addition to meeting my very basic user requirements (internet, photos, access to various files and forms, etc). I primarily purchased a netbook to use in my film work as a producer. I wanted something portable, compact and light, but with nearly the same functionality as my home computer. I have an iMac at home and was concerned about being able to successfully switch between an iMac and a windows-based netbook, but I honestly was not interested in spending $1,000 or more on a comparable Apple product. All I can say is I LOVE my netbook ! I can take it anywhere, it is small enough to even fit in my purse, and I haven’t had any issues switching back and forth between my Mac and my netbook. The ASUS is comfortable – the keyboard is normal sized, so I don’t make any adjustment when typing. The screen is small but still large enough to read comfortably (plus I can easily re-size the view using the touchpad). and I love the battery-life (I’m not sure it was 10.5 hours but I do know it lasted at least 9 hours, which is awesome). I also think the price was very reasonable . . .$377. I now find that I use the netbook as much (if not more) than my iMac because I can use it in bed or while sitting on the sofa watching TV, etc.
Best investment

I just bought this netbook for school. Its almost perfect. the only problem that I have with it is that I have to have a cloth with me at all times for the fingerprints but other then that its one of the best investments I have made recently. I also didnt mind the rocker bar for the space bar. I think it looks more sleeker like that.
Nice little computer, Hackintosh Friendly
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the opportunity to play with this machine for 2 weeks now. I also bought the 2GB RAM module that is listed in the “buy together” section for this item. My review is for the unit with 2GB of RAM.
For the first week I used Windows XP, which came preinstalled on the system. Web browsing, email, word precessing all work acceptably. Hula and Netflix (in Standard Definition) have some minor video jitters (slight pauses), but the audio is OK. However, the video jitter makes this unusable for me as a video viewing device. Don’t even think about trying to watch an HD feed, the video is too jumpy. Standard Definition YouTube works well. The video issue is a limitation of the CPU, as you can see the CPU spikes at 100% on Hulu, Netflix, etc.
The screen is small, only 1024 x 600. You know this going in, but I still find it hard to navigate new web pages. If it is a web site that I know well, then I don’t have too much of a problem.
The keyboard is generous for a netbook, but I still have some trouble typing on it. I do not touch type in the traditional way, but I do type without looking at my fingers. They keyboard takes some getting used to, but even still, I could not write a novel on this.
For the last week I have been running the unit as a Hackintosh (running Apple OS X Snow Leopard). Check the insanelymac dot com forums for details on how to install Snow Leopard on this. You have to switch out the wireless card (I used a Dell 1510 card, about $35 from dell). Switching out the card involves taking the netbook apart and voiding the warranty. You have been warned. Having said that, this little machine runs Snow Leopard pretty well! It still has the same issues with Hulu and Netflix video playback though.
I have not had any issues with the power adapater. However, I have been unplugging the adapter from the wall socket once the netbook is charged. The power brick gets very, very, very hot. The manual warns of this, but this is the hottest I have ever had a power brick for a computing device get. I can see why so many people are getting power brick failures. It needs to be re-engineered.
I still give this thing 4 starts, why? Because it does pretty much what is advertised, and if you read the reviews, then you know what you are getting going in. Before I had this in my hands I thought about getting a second one to replace my wife’s aging dell laptop. I’m glad I didn’t. When people say this is good for a second or third computer, listen to them. This is not acceptable for a primary computer. The screen is just too small
It’s more of something to use when you need more than an iphone but less than a laptop. It’s good to keep on the Coffee Table to look things up quickly while you are watching TV or reading a book. It might be good in college to take to class and take some notes (if you can get over the small keyboard), but as a primary computer for work, research, study, it won’t cut it. (The other reviews already tell you this, I just want to reiterate it again!)
If you are deciding between this and a cheap (full size) laptop, then you should probably get the laptop. This is a niche item. If you have a need to fill the niches (I did) then this is for you.
A Great Netbook!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this netbook! When I ordered my first netbook, I wasn’t sure how user-friendly and useful it would be. However, this ASUS turned out to be everything I expected, and more. I love the classy look and the form factor. I ordered the RAM upgrade to 2GB and the Samsung DVD writer that was recommended here. The RAM installed without a hitch, and the Samsung DVD works great. The glossy black look of the DVD writer matches the netbook glossy look perfectly. I don’t mind all the fingerprints. They clean off easily. This netbook is fast and fully functional. I like having 3 USB ports. The 10.5 hour battery life is incredible! Other users were unsure about viewing a glossy screen, but don’t worry. I hardly notice any reflections…I think because of the smaller screen. My Gateway 17″ laptop with a glossy screen shows a lot of reflections, even inside. I really don’t mind them. But, I am thrilled that the ASUS glossy screen is so easy on the eyes. The glossy screen makes the colors and photos so rich and vivid. I love looking at this screen! I bought the netbook primarily for traveling, but I find myself using it at home much more than I use my laptop.
Do Not Buy This Product

My battery recharger failed within 24 hours, I returned it and received no notification that a replacement was shipped. I have called ASUS customer service five times and they have not met their commitments to me on any of these calls. I was promised call back 3 times and did not receive one, the RMA said the part would ship within one day it has now been a week.
I bought the netbook for a trip to Singapore and Malaysia, I leave in a few days and cannot even return the netbook because I returned my damaged recharger for replacement. As a 10 year user of ASUS motherboards, I am truly disappointed, I will never buy another of their products.
Nice machine, but be aware of power supply issues
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My power supply went out after 45 days. I can tell from the feedback that I am not alone. That’s aggravating, but the real problem is ASUS customer support for this obviously common problem. I would have to fax them a form with my personal information to include name, address, phone, email, credit card, expiration date, and my signature acknowledging that I will be liable if I don’t ship back the broken power supply within 14 days at my expense! Only then will they send me a replacement via FedEx ground. When I pressed a supervisor for other options, I was told the only other one was to buy a new one from their e-store. What terrible customer support for a product under warranty!
Buy only if you like gambling

I bought it for my wife after reading some good reviews. It looked pretty good and it worked fine… for 10 minutes… then the trouble started.
Windows started crashing, freezing, unable to boot, keyboard or touchpad not working, etc. Tried to recover Windows 10+ times. Most of the times failed recoverying… froze during the process. I tried all possible things from disabling things from bios to running in safe mode, updating the bios, getting latest drivers, etc. The idea is it worked for a while then the craziness started all over again. I tried installing a different Windows version but still the same. It looks like a hardware issue.
I shipped it back after 2 days of nightmares… and I’ll never buy these kind of “brands”. I’ll stick to the ones I used and as I have already 3 Lenovo notebooks I already ordered the S10-2 for my wife. It’s a bit more expensive but I hope their quality gets confirmed by the netbooks, too.
Poor Product…Poorer Customer Service
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook from Amazon as a gift for my daughter who is a student. The service from Amazon was as usual, excellent. However, the second time my daughter tried to charge the computer using the supplied battery charger. The charger would not operate at all and the computer became useless once the onboard battery ran down. I dutifully went onto the ASUS website, reported the problem and promptly received instructions to call their customer service number. There I was connected to a very nice young lady who explained that the system was still under warranty and therefore: They would send me an email with a form which I was to fill out, including my credit card information, and fax back to a toll number she provided. Once that was done and processed by ASUS, my daughter would receive a replacement in about a WEEK! After receiving the replacement charger, I could either mail the defective charger back to them at my expense, or just let them debit my credit card for the price of a new charger! This is, without a doubt, the ABSOLUTE WORST customer service I have ever encountered. I intend to refer this matter to Amazon in hopes that they will do better. But regardless, I will NEVER buy another ASUS product, not will I ever recommend one. I strongly recommend that if you are in the market for a netbook, LOOK ELSEWHERE!
Power supply problems continue for the ASUS 1005-HA
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Add mine to the list of 1005-HAs shipped with defective power supplies. My computer exhibited the precise symptoms described by others–the first charge-up went fine, but when I had depleted the battery and went to recharge it, the power supply failed to do anything. I had a good 8 hours of computing, though (works out to about $44.25 an hour).
I am trying to exchange the machine, but so far Amazon has declined to accept the return, saying that I need to contact the manufacturer first (incidentally, what if this were the usual response from retail outlets? “My jeans are defective”–”well, first fax an incident report to Levi’s.”). This suggestion was less than helpful because the ASUS phone number forwarded me by Amazon has been disconnected.
Amazon seems to be concerned that I am simply “experiencing performance or compatibility problems”–and that my computer thus does not qualify as “defective” by their criteria–but I would contend that a new computer that cannot be supplied with electricity is a complete lemon. Caveat emptor.
