ASUS Eee PC 1000HE ~ Chortling with Glee
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am quite pleased with this unit.

It is the perfect tool for college.

I immediately installed a skin on the outer shell and am using an external trackball mouse.

I expect to be using this little machine for quite some time.

Finest laptop/netbook I’ve ever used!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
There are already several hundred reviews that have been written about this netbook, so I don’t need to say too much. But let me just say that I’ve been absolutely delighted with it during the few months that I’ve owned it.

The battery life is every bit as good as the manufacturer claims. You’ll easily hit around 9 hours, just so long as you don’t have anything plugged into it (i.e. when I have my broadband card hooked up, it will reduce the battery life down to something like 7 hours).

You will, of course, need to get an external DVD/CD drive, but I haven’t found that that has been a big drawback.

I would recommend picking up a 2 gig RAM card. I did that right when I ordered it. It brings the performance in line with at least the last Dell laptop that I had (and without the endless headaches of owning a Dell!).

The compact keyboard may be awkward for some, but I don’t think that it makes a big difference at all. Some of Asus’ “Seashell” netbooks have larger keyboards/screen, but the drawback to the slightly larger size is a reduced battery life. For my purposes, this one works out just perfectly.

I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another EEE PC in the future.

I love it….all that I need.

I would consider myself as an electronic minimalist…so, this suits me just fine. Volume is a bit low, however, even when set at the highest volume. I still highly recommend this for the price.

Neat workhorse with booster battery
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
First let me say that I scourged the internet for netbook reviews before buying this product. Now having said that, this thing is fierce. Having worked at Best Buy selling laptops I have physically held alot of laptops, I can tell that the quality Asus has put into their product is great. When I build computers I prefer to stick to Asus parts, and time and time again I am rewarded with quality and performance. The weight of the machine is perfectly acceptable given that this booster battery pack is such a beast. I have just upgraded from Internet Tablet – Nokia N810 Portable Internet Tablet

Now that I have such a formidable little machine that can tear through Flash CS3, as well as Photoshop, Inkscape, Bluefish. I am truly impressed at the level of output of the Atom processor, knowing that going into the race I knew it was about getting the right chipset.

I do recommend using a stripped lean version of Windows XP. Immediately recognized USB Cd/DVD Drive.

If you can buy, I do recommend it.

Given that I have a wifi internet-tablet linux webserver with PHP + Python and this little netbook, I feel very tech powerful.

SD card is great, webcam is suprisingly clear just need to make sure adequate light.

this is some hardcore geeklove i have for this thing, it is like holding magic

The Niche Between PDA and Laptop
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My office uses many mobile computing devices to interface with remote sensing equipment and download data. These activites often occur in hostile environments. We’ve tried ruggedized laptops, such as Panasonic Toughbooks and Getac M220′s. They’re heavy and slow. And we’ve tried PDAs, such as HP iPaqs. PDA’s are not always easy to use and our older employees have trouble reading the tiny screens. The ASUS Eee PC fits in between laptops and PDAs.

We don’t have any data on durability of the ASUS Eee PC. However, the price made it worth a try for field applications. They actually cost less than the iPaq models were were buying. So far, our employees are very happy with these netbooks.

If we have any complaint about this device, it’s that there’s no CD/DVD drive to use as a boot device. This makes it difficult to burn disk images with Symantec Ghost. But it is possible to reload the operating system with a standard template by using a USB-connected device. Tricky, but possible.

Best Purchase I’ve Made in a Long Time!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Asus EEE pc he1000 is quite simply the best electronics purchase I’ve made in several years. And if you’ve been trying to decide on a Netbook, this should definitely be a top contender.

I’ve owned several 14″-17″ notebooks in the past, but the EEE pc was a true game-changer for me. At first I was somewhat concerned about the small keyboard, lack of DVD, and of course, small screen. But 3 months later, the EEE PC and I have grown inseparable. Its really the perfect solution for what I needed–a small portable laptop that I could access internet and MP3s around the house and yard, in bed (without disturbing my girlfriend or dog), and take with me on a trip or to a coffee shop. And I’ve since discovered it to be the perfect companion while in the bath or pool.

The Pros:

*Its small and very portable. I often just carry it around in my backpack, or slip it in my girlfriend’s purse. The 10″ screen size takes very little adjustment to get used to. While the 1024×600 resolution means you’ll spend a lot of time scrolling in websites, the overall effect is quite easy on the eyes. In fact, I can do everything I did on the 17″ Dell, with almost no drop off in usability or comfort. The same goes for the keyboard–you’ll initially spend a day or two fumbling with the wrong keys, but it quickly becomes second nature and I can type very comfortably with it. As for the weight–its heavier than you might expect it to be, but its still the lightest notebook I’ve ever used.

*Its powerful enough for what I needed. Windows XP is the perfect operating system for this, and it runs it surprisingly well. It’s a Netbook–and not meant to replace your desktop or primary computer… But I was still surpised when programs opened faster than I was expecting. And I have no problems running multiple internet windows and tabs at once. However for best performance I would recommend you add 1 more gb of RAM (under $20) and use a “lighter” browser like firefox or chrome.

*Battery life is quite good, and that’s one of the biggest reasons its been so much more portable for me–when I’m at a friend’s or the library I don’t need to lug around the power cord and stay near an outlet. I keep my LCD set to the lowest settings (1-3) and I typically get anywhere from 5-6.5 hours. Of course that is much lower than the advertised 8-9 hours… but I didn’t believe that anyway. And it’s a huge improvement from the the 1-2 hour notebooks I’ve used in the past.

*The screen is very clear and vibrant. It has a very wide viewing angle and few problems with glare or reflection.

*Tons of storage. 160 gb. I’ve thousands of photos and hundreds of albums, and still not even half full.

*Touchpad tap features work great. However it can be a little too sensitive at times.

Negatives:

*It’s disappointing if you’re expecting 9 hours of battery time.

*The keyboard bezel seems to “flex” a little. Hasn’t caused any problems, but it feels a little flimsy.

* Don’t expect to play any games. Works great for emulators and older games, but forget about anything 3D.

* The glossy case will get covered in fingerprints….

*The fan gets irritatingly loud at factory specs. Don’t notice it much with normal sounds, but in bed, in the silent dark, it would drive me crazy–I almost returned it. However if you download a program called “eeectl” (search google) you can control your fan speed and monitor the temperature. I lowered my fan to default at 30% and it fixed the problem completely!

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is just what I was looking for in a small laptop. It does everything my larger laptop does, except playing CD’s or DVD’s.

Great Product
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you need something to take with you on vacation/travel or you want a nice little addition to your home network so you can lay around on the couch and surf the internet without having a 10lb laptop on your lap then get one of these. The price is great. It can do everything you can do with a full size laptop as long as your expectations aren’t too high. Speed is great, disk size is just fine, as long as you have some external media for CD’s/DVD’s you are all set. And the best thing is you didn’t drop a grand on it so you can replace it in a couple of years (or sooner if you have problems with it) without feeling like your flushing money on something that will be out of date as soon as you buy it.

I am not a knowledgable computer person, but found this netbook easy to use and handy for travel. Candidly, I use it for word processing and to access the internet. It camebe used for other things, but I stick to what I know.

Love the Battery!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really like not having to carry the power cord to school. I gave this thing a bit of a test awhile ago: streaming video, downloading video, and updating antivirus software at the same time… it had no problems. Then I watched an hour of video, and surfed for another four. The battery still didn’t need charging. Although, it does a lot better with youtube (not laggy) than it does with megavideo (laggy! Can’t watch! Memory upgrade may help…).

I don’t like the zoom feature at all. It kept thinking I was zooming when I was scrolling, and then it would never zoom when I actually wanted it to (to make the webpage readable again, for example). But, that’s easy enough to disable.

Not sure how much this means coming from someone with small hands, but the keyboard on this netbook is actually easier for me to type on than the keyboard for my full size laptop.

For a netbook, the sound is really good too. I’ve compared it to my friend’s acer, and I think it’s less tinny.

This is my new main computer, and only partly because my other laptop needs a new power cord.

After almost two years of using Vista, I’m glad to be back to XP. The length of time it takes to connect to a network on this thing is great, too… it reconnects almost instantly after being turned on or brought out of hibernation.

I definitely recommend this computer.

I have had this netbook for 6 months now. I have used it extensively and never had a problem with it. It is great to take on a trip and to use at home. I have been very satisfied with this purchase.

smaller than I expected but definitely lighter!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Hey – I really like this computer! It is much smaller than I expected it to be. It is however, much lighter than I expected, and that’s really cool. I like that. Currently having trouble with getting the bluetooth to work right, so I’m not sure about that, but I gotta take a look. Thanks for reading!

Pleased, as expected with the Asus eee 1000HE netbook
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I researched netbooks intensely before buying one, so I was prepared for what I was purchasing. The eee 1000HE is big enough for my wide hands, and small enough that’s it’s as light as a textbook in my backpack. It’s wireless is highly connective and easy. The function keys are thoughtful and useful. The keyboard layout is the best I’ve encountered in a netbook. The screen has excellent resolution.

The key selling point for me was the extended battery life. I bought it for the PhD classes I’m taking, and I didn’t want to have to worry about plugging in or running out of juice, even on long days. In class I set the brightness low, in the quad I turn it high. I have gotten over 8 hours per charge minimum, and weeks where I leave the brightness low I’ve gotten over 9 hours, even watching television shows over the internet.

My quibbles are minor. Like most customers, I find the fingerprint and smudge attracting finish pointless. I do a lot of sound processing and I found the difficulty (so far, impossibility) of turning off the built in microphones to be a problem. The built-ins work adequately, and I can even record classes with the 1000HE, but the built-ins are aimed for reasonable competence, and it shouldn’t be a problem to use better externals.

Overall, the product is doing everything it advertises, and doing it well.
