One MAJOR flaw
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought the HP Mini 1035 two days ago because I wanted a lightweight computer that I could travel with, and do basic work and email on. I love the size, the keyboard is easy to type on, so it seemed like the perfect little machine…

However, I couldn’t connect to the wireless connection in my apartment (Mac wireless router). After two hours on the phone with HP support, they told me to call Mac, saying it must be a problem with the router. Mac support explained that this mini notebook probably wasn’t WPA compatible, which is a newer wireless standard technology. It’s only WEP compatible (older wireless technology). The only way I could connect wirelessly was to change my Mac router settings so that my wireless connection isn’t secure — meaning any of my neighbors in the area could latch on to my connection. I live in NYC, I have a LOT of neighbors.

When I called HP back to ask them about this — to find out if this truly was a WPA vs. WEP issue — it took more than FOUR hours on the phone with them before they finally admitted that this machine isn’t WPA compatible. They just kept trying to problem-solve by telling me how I could adjust the security on my router. At one point they CONFERENCED IN the Mac support people so Mac could explain the “perfect settings” for me to be on to be wireless on my mini. The Mac people were basically laughing saying that they don’t recommend being on a not-secure connection. I finally got an HP tech person to admit that they know that this is a problem and that they’re not supposed to address it. They don’t make a mini right now with the WPA technology.

WPA is the standard at Starbucks, hotels, airports, basically everywhere. What is the point of having this tiny little computer that you can take everywhere, if you’re not going to be allowed to access the wireless networks?

I find it crazy that I had to call the Mac people to get to the bottom of my HP problem. I’m returning this computer tomorrow and am going to try and find a mini that’s up to WPA. If not, I’m going to have to wait until they catch up. I DO NOT recommend the HP Mini unless you don’t care about having a secure wirelss connection in your home. Or if you don’t intend to log on wirelessly from other locations.

I received a refurbished item
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I ordered this item from Amazon. The mini laptop is very functional for its weight and size, however, I received a refurbished one. Even though a paid for a new one, Amazon sent me an used computer. Not only that I requested to get the refund as a gift card since it gets too long to get refunds back to my credit card, and they did not do it, even though they assured that the refund was going to be credited to my account. When, I called they did not have more laptops available, now they are selling I guess the one I returned. Very dissapointing.

Hp Mini is the greatest!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Received the HP Mini 1035 NR computer and gave it to my husband for his birthday. He loves it!!!! He carries it everywhere and keeps saying its the best present I’ve ever given him. He says the keyboard is quite easy to use and the quality of the sound is excellant. He’s used it at meetings to take notes and in restaurants to keep up with his email traffic. All in all a wonderful mini computer that does everything well in such a convenient size to carry since it’s lighter than most books. We highly recommend it for anyone needing a mini computer.

HP mini 1035 NR Is Just Right…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m a graphic designer, computer tutor and instructional technology student. I own 5 computers, including a brand new HP mini 1035NR. So far I am absolutely thrilled… I needed a something portable and sturdy, with dependable, quick and easy access to the internet in a variety of locations,I must have decent graphics (I’m rather picky about that) and a friendly interface. I do my homework, and I am realistic about what the limitations of a netbook are. I’ll use it for a variety of extremely useful tasks, but I don’t expect to run my graphics programs on a netbook… That said, after much flip flopping, I purchased this HP as part of a package: netbook, case, dvd writer, and mini mouse.

It was a close race between the acer, asus, and HP…it finally came down to the best deal and I like my HP netbook so much that I’m not even coveting that adorable (but way too expensive) little sony netbook anymore. My HP mini is way faster than I actually expected… Camera is fine in good light, IMHO, built in mics are always audio nightmares…so I’ll be using a usb headphone/mic for podcasts…The storage key is a neat extra…ALL in ALL…Two thumbs up for the stylish little powerhouse HP mini 1035NR!

Great for portability and convenience
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this unit for 2 reasons: portability and convenience. I never regret buying this unit. I got what I expected from HP Mini 1035 NR.

I travel a lot and while on the road, I need to be in constant contact with my office and our clients by replying to emails, sending documents electronically, writing reports, and sending data back to the office. The unit is also great for note-taking during meetings, seminars, and conferences. All these jobs can be done easily using the HP Mini. Keeping in touch with the family through web chatting and updating my personal website is so easy with this unit.

Detecting and connecting to wireless internet in the hotels and airports is a breeze.

To some, the 60-GB hard drive is too small, but this doesn’t bother me at all because I use this unit to store only a few family pictures, my favorite Christian music, and small amount of office documents that I think I might need while on-the-road. For this reason, the 60-GB HD is way more than enough for these files. I did not buy this unit to be used as storage for all my files. I have a 320-GB external drive that stores all my office and personal documents that easily connects to my HP Mini and office laptop whenever I need a document to store or to send.

Connection of this HP Mini to my old printer at home was not a problem at all. I downloaded the driver for the printer from the web, installed it in this unit, and in less than 6 minutes my HP mini is working in perfect tandem with the printer.

Battery life is reasonable. The 3-hour battery life is more than enough to get my job done while at the airport, restaurant, or while on-board a plane.

The two USB port is also enough for what I need. One port is always used for the wireless mouse, while the other port is for the external hard drive (if ever I need to get files from it).

I do not use the webcam and do not foresee that I will ever use it so I am not bothered by the review that says the picture quality is poor.

The combined jack for mic and earphone is perfectly fine with me. I use this port only while listening to my favorite music that plays in the background while working on my reports.

For me, this is the best netbook available in the market in terms of fuctionality and performance. Once again, portability and convenience are my two benifits that this unit can give. This is a perfect replacement for the heavy laptop computers.

I highly recommend this for persons who is always on-the-go but needs to stay totally connected with the office, clients, and family.

Nice keyboard, but feature decisions may break this deal.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve set up several versions of HP’s Mini 1000 for customers. It’s a nice machine to use if it has what you need.

Pros:

- The keyboard. It’s the best of the netbooks.

- Size and weight are great. It’s slimmer than most of its competitors

- Appearance is great. The outside is beautiful, but delicate. Get a slip case. The inside is slightly textured, which reduces but doesn’t eliminate the piano fingerprint effect.

- Ethernet: While easy to miss at first, it is there. It’s hidden behind the rubber guard on the left side, front corner of the machine.

Cons:

- The 3-cell battery is only good for 2-3 hours. While HP provides a 6-cell option for $40 in some build-to-order models, it’s a $100 item in their store, and currently out of stock. Ouch. The only aftermarket alternative I’ve seen so far is from Mugen. Their version has more capacity than HP’s, but it’s huge and $145.

- The “video/expansion” port instead of something usable. It’s simply bizarre. I think the port provides additional connections for a dock, if anyone ever builds one. At the moment the port is useless. The connector itself isn’t quite proprietary – I think Sony uses it on a model – but you won’t find a cable anywhere to get external video. This is a deal breaker if you need it for presentations or expect to use it with your large screen/kbd combo at home. Yes, USB video adapters exist but they’re big and over $100.

- Storage is small. In most models HP tops out with a 60GB drive in comparison to the 120-160GB drives from other manufacturers.

- The 3rd recessed proprietary USB port is another oddity. Low effort for HP, but almost zero value. Few things can fit since the socket is inside the machine. HP sells a thumbdrive that fits, which is just a low capacity Transcend JetFlash thumbdrive with flush-fitting cover for twice market price. Just buy a JetFlash and it’ll fit inside nicely.

- The documentation is almost useless. There aren’t even good pictures & descriptions of the ports, though HP does provide some in their technical manuals available on their website, as long as you aren’t trying to learn about the video or 3rd USB ports.

I like the machine feel and appearance, but the value is marginal compared to its competition. Overall it feels like HP hired part-time college interns to put out these bundles. Too many odd HP oddities and not enough supporting hardware out of the gate.

hp 1035 two side of the coin
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The HP mini 1035 is by far the best netbook under the 400usd mark. Second only to its newest and better highly improved brother the HP mini 2140. It has the best specs and the webcam issue can be easly fixed.

However do take head that the newer wave release of hp 1035 no longer has 1024×600 resolution but 1024×576 much like the 1137model

Great computer BUT it has a fatal flaw
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The computer is really pretty great except for one fatal flaw. HP Support tells me that they installed a dark plastic film inside the computer case, in front of the webcam lens. This was done to prevent the webcam from getting too much light if you point it at the sun.

Personally, I never use the webcam outdoors anyway.

The effect is that unless you use photographic lights, you can not obtain an acceptable level of lighting to use this webcam indoors. Don’t trust looking at this in a brightly lit store; your home is not as brightly lit as Best Buy!

The webcam will not work acceptably in your home or office. If you decide to try this out, check the return policies first! You can probably figure out how to open up the case and remove the film from the lens, but you will undoubtedly void any warranty. HP would not tell me how to open up the case.

Great Mini Notebook
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This has been one of the best investments that have made. I am a student at a four year University and bought the HP Mini 1000 specifically to take to class to take notes. Recently my University made it a requirement to have a laptop, I went out and bought a small “ultra portable” 12.1″ notebook. I ended up spending around $1,000 for the computer. Then about a month ago I got the HP netbook. Its small size and weight allows me to pack it around to all of my classes, and for once the computer weighs less then my textbooks!

I picked the Mini 1000 because of all the netbooks out there it had the largest keyboard, which took very little getting used to. I loaded Office 2007, and with the beta version of Microsoft Live Mesh, I am able to keep my two computers synced up, transferring notes and file easily to and fro.

The only complaint that I have is that the small 3 cell battery is not enough to get me through the day without carrying around the power cord. I can get a little over 3 hours with the wireless card turned on, and the screen set at about half power (brightness).

This is a great little machine, but remember it is not a complete substitute for a full size computer.

Switches off by itself
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This computer makes me more mobile, but there are two things that make using it uncomfortable:

First and the most important, it turns off without warning in the middle of work, showing some blue screen with some message first. It turns off so fast that I can’t even read the message!

Secondly, there’s only one hole to incert a mike and the earphones, which requires you to have one of those mikes that you use with your cell phone.

not so good for me!
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook 2 weeks ago, and returned it w/in 5 days because it caught a virus! Its really cool looking but I actually think it costs too much for what the device actually does. Plus, you have to buy a lot of upgrades along with it. It also is a lot slower than a regular-sized computer because it is of course a lot smaller. I would recommend that you look into netbooks more so than I did, because you might be very disappointed!

Got it, loved it, bought another for my wife.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This product is as good as the reviewers said it was. I was disconcerted about the lack of a manual, but it really is plug and play. The built-in camera was described as requiring a lot of light, and at home with incandescent lighting, this is true. But I tried it in an office with a normal amount of ceiling fluorescent lighting and it was fine. My wife went nuts over it and I just got our second. We added a slim notebook external CD/DVD RW drive and it too was plug and play. I like being able to switch off the bluetooth and wireless with ease before shutting down. Then when you turn it back on, it is off until your virus software loads and you just switch it on. Processor is quick with 1.6 Ram.

Great for quick use.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I am a college student and use my computer to take notes with and email. I had a 17inch Dell laptop which was just too big to bring out unless I was going to use it for a while. This if suspended boots quick enough that I bring it out more often than my blackberry and considering I dont have large hands I can type my class notes on it without any issues. Wouldnt buy it for anything video game obviously. Bigget complaint if I had one is the webcam and internal mic. The cam is dark under almost any lighting condition and the mic volume is low enough it wont pick up voice at a comfortable level without talking very loud at it. Have turned up all settings but no luck.
