My Thoughts After Eight Months
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve been using my netbook for almost a year now, and these are my personal comments regarding it:
On the plus side, the size, shape, and weight of the computer are nice. I also really like the soft zippered sleeve that came with it, as well as the cleaning cloth. For my needs (which mainly include word processing and online gaming), the port count and placement have been all right, and the screen size has been adequate. The way the keys are about flush with the bottom portion of the chassis and depress enough to create a bit of a pocket has come in very handy; I can put a small object on there to hold the desired key down, and it stays put and works nicely.
My first big complaint is with the Shift key on the right side. Even after all these months, I still accidentally hit the up arrow from time to time when I mean to hit Shift, and I can’t tell you how annoying it is when I’m in the middle of a chat and the entire line I was typing gets erased because of that. I would much rather they designed it like my sister’s Acer netbook, where both Shift keys are full size, and the arrow keys are elsewhere.
The second biggest issue to me is the computer’s somewhat sluggish performance. While for the most part it can “get by” while I’m gaming or playing media, the draggy feel, even in Super Performance Mode, can get to be a nuisance. I’m seriously considering buying the 2GB RAM upgrade for it.
There have been a few, less significant issues I’ve noticed. The battery life never lasts seven hours, even in Power Saving Mode. Also, sometimes when I first power the computer on, the screen will remain black. I have to power off and then power on again in order to resolve that. But, again, not too big a deal to me, as long as it doesn’t get worse.
Overall this product is decent enough, but if I had this purchase decision to make over again, I think I’d just go ahead and shell out the extra hundred bucks or so for a full-size, full capability laptop.
At last, a PC that fits in my lap!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had many laptops over the years, but all were really portable desktops – too bulky for traveling and around-the-house computing. Enter the so-called “netbooks” and the best of their kind, the Eee PC!
I LOVE this little guy. It is tiny and light, yet full-featured. If it had a slightly more powerful graphics engine, I’d hook it up to a large LCD monitor and junk my desktop.
I bought the 2GB memory upgrade – I definitely recommend that. Also, I have a 32GB SDHC card that I keep the master “My Documents” folder on. That allows me to switch easily between my desktop and laptop by simply taking the SDHC card out of the desktop port and popping it into the special SD port on the Eee PC.
I use this little PC all around the house – in the bedroom, by the pool, in front of the TV. It gets way more use than my desktop. And it is a dream to travel with. The wonderful memory-foam sleeve that comes with it provides perfect protection in my backpack when traveling.
I cannot say enough good things about this unit – even bought an extra one for my wife. If you are in the market for a basic, highly-portable laptop, especially for traveling, then you will want to buy this.
UPDATE NOTE: You might want to get the newer model with the faster N280 processor. Worth the extra few bucks.
Excellent all day on the go solution

I purchased this because I am a bike commuter who has sporadic web computing needs. Because I carry all of my stuff in a pannier about 15 mile each way, along with a bunch of other stuff, a full laptop along with a power cord makes no sense.
The Asus 1000HE has been great. Although the first 1000HE I received was DOA, Amazon’s service worked perfectly. I received a new one and returned the non-functioning one using Amazon’s return label. The replacement netbook has offered trouble-free computing for over a month. Because compatibility is important in my work, I loaded 2003 Office onto the machine and it runs perfectly. My only complaint is the hesitant touchpad. It is a bit slow, and while I love the dual-finger scrolling in theory, it sometimes misinterprets my dual-finger strokes for the zoom feature.
Everything else works without additional considerations required, and the keyboard works well with my average-for-a-six-footer hands. The screen brightness is very good, and the battery is as-advertised– I’ve gone to well over six hours with capacity to spare. Recommended product.
An upgrade from the original asus 700 series, and well worth it!

I bought one of the original ASUS netbooks in November 2007 – 7 inch screen, 4g hard drive, only ran linux, boxy machine, etc. I loved the idea of having a computer I could fit in my handbag (I’m slightly ashamed to admit that the first place I had read about the ASUS wasn’t in a tech magazine, but, of all places, Vogue). And it was easy enough to use to get online, etc. But I just couldn’t get around the linux blocks. I had heard that linux was so easy once you learned it, but gosh darnit, I spent over 15 hours trying to upgrade my adobe flash (finding directories, opening Konquerer, etc) and it just was getting impossible for me.
I hated to admit I’d been beaten by linux, so I stuck it out for a while, using the machine to listen to online radio, use open office, mostly for travel, etc. But then my local public radio’s streaming thingy (and that’s a tech term!) required me to upgrade something on my browser, which led to the whole linux mess all over again, and that was it for me. I sold it on ebay, and put the money towards this little gem.
Here’s what I love about it:
1) Screen size – so much better than the smaller ones – it’s amazing the difference that 3 inches makes. I had made up my mind on this machine without even looking at it (did research online) and when I finally opened it, I was blown away by how usable it is. It might wind up being my normal daily computer based on how easy it is to read. Also, if you’ve had one of those 7 inch ones, you know that you need to scroll like crazy to read anything online. Not with this. I really don’t think I can ever go back to a smaller screen after seeing this.
2) Again, because it’s a bigger model – the keys are awesome. I have pretty small hands, so the keys didn’t absolutely kill me on the 7 inch one, but my hubby found them difficult. These keys are really almost-normal sized, and very easy to use.
3) The big hard drive. No longer do I need to carry my external hard drive everywhere with me. Even my work computer only has a 60g hard drive, so this is very pleasant.
4) A partitioned hard drive so that if I’m ever feeling adventurous, I can actually learn linux without having it forced on me!
5) It seems to run really quickly. At one point when I first got it I had tons of stuff downloading at once – software and updates – and it never crashed or showed any signs of slowing down. I’m very impressed with that aspect.
Yeah, the cover is pretty shiny and fingerprint-prone, but it is what it is…
I’m definitely a fan of this gorgeous machine. And for the price, it’s definitely recommended.
Everything is good but it’s broken after 2 months.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Everything is good except the touch pad which is not as smooth to use as Dell or HP laptop/netbooks.
My problem is, the stupid thing broke after 2 months of light usage. I never drop it or abused it in anyway. Now it still boots up but the screen is blank. The only way to use it is connect it to my external monitor.
I contacted ASUS 2 days ago but I haven’t get a response yet. I checked other eee user forums and message boards. Seems like EEE PC’s screen problems are common and they only way to fix this problem is to return it. Because I haven’t even heard from them 2 days after reporting the problem, I can imagine taking months to get this stupid thing fixed. By the time I get it back, I’ll probably be able to buy it from ebay for $50.
This will be my first and last PC from a Chinese/Taiwanese PC maker. I should have stayed with Dell, HP, or Sony. My $370 is totally wasted! What am I going to do without the netbook for the next whatever months it takes ASUS to fix it? I don’t want to carry my heavy laptop nor do I want to buy another netbook and end up with 2 netbooks later.

I hated RMA’s on repairs. It takes forever unless you get some kind of replacement. I was worried when I didn’t hear from Asus until the 48th hour because I expected a response within 24 hours. As a result, I expect at least weeks or 2 months to get my Netbook back. To my suprise, I mailed my netbook from NYC on Friday with USPS (could have used UPS. I always though USPS priority is the cheapest. To my surprise, USPS charged me $18 but it would be $7 if I used USPS. USPS is a freaking ripoff.) Anyway, the netbook was delivered to Indiana on Monday. Just the next day(7/4), I got an email notification that my netbook is on it’s way back. That’s really quick! The email gave me a tracking number but didn’t tell me what shipping company they are using. It’s all numbers so I know it’s not UPS. I went to USPS’s web site and try to track it. As usually, USPS tracking site was never help. Somethings it updates quickly but most of the time you won’t get to see any tracking information until days after the item is delivered. On Friday (7/7), I found a note on my door saying my package was delivered to my next door neighbor. I was very happy to get it back so quick. The only thing I didn’t like was that they wiped out harddrive and installed a fresh copy of XP. The service note says they resolved 3 things, HDD error — which is a lie, lazy, or maybe the tech doesn’t know how to boot into Linux or XP safe mode. Standard XP boot up won’t work because it doesn’t recognize the external monitor. All otherwise I have absolutely no problem with both Windows and Linux if I connect the netbook to an external monitor. They also said they replaced the screen and some sort of screen ASM (not sure what that is). Luckily my netbook was new and rarely used. I don’t have much data to backup and restore. So all I have to do was just reinstall a few windows programs and my Ubuntu Linux OS. And also restore iphone backup. Then update this review… I actually wanted to change the 1-star to 2.5 or 3 stars but Amazon’s web page won’t let me do it. Or maybe I am not trying hard enough.
With how Asus promptly fixed my netbook, I am a happy customer. I am considering getting a few EEE netbooks for Xmas or back to school gifts.
It is convenient to travel
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It is a good device, to travel, or to stay on-line, however to be a team with little memory, it is usually very slow, the one that wants to use it as regular computer, is not very good.
Big enough and small enough
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just the right size to carry around with a keyboard that is easy to employ. Functions like a big one.
Perfect for everything but gaming
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this for 4 months now and it’s perfect for email, writing documents, and surfing the web. It’s nice alternative to a notebook.
Small and powerful
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a very compact but relatively powerful laptop. My only problems have been the space bar usually inserts two spaces rather than one, and I have had problems in connecting to the internet at times using my home network over a satellite connection. Other than those problems, we have been very happy with the computer.
Great Laptop… Even if a tad limited.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I ordered this laptop a few months ago, just as something nice and basic to get the job done while I’m in transition. It’s a great laptop, don’t get me wrong, but the graphics card can be a bit limiting, but this laptop can still crank out some games I wouldn’t expect, like Half-Life 2[but for some reason CSS doesn't run], though. And the lack of a disc drive can be annoying when you don’t have other means to run discs. Besides those two nitpicks, which you should already know before buying it, it’s a great laptop for the price. The wireless works great, the memory keeps it running fast and smooth, and really portable. Given a second chance I probably would’ve just waited to get a laptop more suited to my tastes, but this handy little netbook should be just perfect for most audiences.
6 mos.: button failure, touch pad failure, hard drive failure
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I ordered this laptop 6 months ago from Amazon, and was initially pleased except for a few things:
- battery life quickly dropped from “7-8 hours” to more like 3.5-4, even with screen brightness down and power-saving battery setting
- the right Shift key, as everyone says, is a phenomenal pain, and takes a week or so to adjust to
- the wifi signal was inevitably weaker than I would get with other laptops in a side-by-side comparison
About three months in, the left button below the touch pad stopped working. A problem, but I adjusted to using just the touch pad. Then the touch pad began acting up — not releasing when I released my finger, etc. I switched to using a portable mouse more often and got ready to send it in for a repair.
Not soon enough. The hard drive died two nights ago. No warning, no trauma, just a blank screen and no more whirring sound. The BIOS doesn’t find it, and ruling out a few other things means it’s fried, along with months of work. (Back your data up TODAY, people.)
This is the last Asus product I ever buy.
Great Little Notebook!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am very happy with this little notebook! Although I use a larger Mac laptop as my primary computer, this one is wonderful for it’s portability. It easily fits in my book bag. I read some of the more technical reviews here prior to purchasing, and was impressed. So far this little Eee lives up to the reviews.
I did install the optional 2 GB memory because I wanted to run photoshop and other software. Everything works just fine.
I would recommend the Asus eee 1000HA to anyone who is looking for a small portable computer.
Few Flaws – Not Perfect!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve had mine for a couple of months now. Few flaws I’ve found.
1) The monitor output doesn’t work for my HD LCD TV (I thought there was something wrong with the current cable I have, but bought a new one and it still doesn’t work!)
2) Battery life isn’t what it claims… 10 hours huh? More like 3.5. I sent an email to ASUS and no response yet.
3) You’ll find that some software won’t work unless it’s in XXXX x XXX pixels.
Other than that, it’s convenient. It takes time to get use to the keyboard like everyone says. If I could, I might have gone with an HP.
Great little machine…

Travel a little? Spend a few hours away from the office here and there? Still need to get access to your files, e-mail, and other information? Then and Eee PC might be for you. For me, the cost was definitely right. I love my desktop and spend as little time away from it as possible. But I still needed easy access for the times when I was away. Running Windows XP, the Eee PC is just like a laptop but smaller, quieter, and cheaper. While it won’t win any prizes in the “Computing Power Olympics” (or run any modern games) it can definitely fill in when you need a quick computer-fix while you’re on the road or on the run. Only downside is that Asus was a little cheap on the memory side, but for $25 more that is easy fixed.
5 hour battery life, not 7
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought 4 Asus Eee netbooks within the last 2 months. I started with a good one for my husband for his trip, then ordered one for myself, that one was returned. I replaced a white one VU1X. The battery die the 2nd night. I returned it and bought a new one with different battery life. Turn out it was a different model than the white one I had and returned before. This one is going to Hong KOng. Hope this one is a good one, not a lemon. I tested the battery life in different ways. It lasts about 5 to slightly over 5 hours. But never 7 hours.
Other things to remind buyers. I thought all ASUS Eee netbooks are ATom N processor. Wrong. Some are Intel Atom N processor, some are Intel Celeron. Model number maybe the same, but the processor or the model maybe different. Read the description carefully.
I bought all from Beach Camera via Amazon. Beach Camera shippments are fast and provides great services. But i worry that they said they do not accept PC return. As the chance of getting ASUS lemon is 50/50, I do not want to deal with ASUS customer services. They are horrible. I followed the tech support instructions, it did not work. Then, you could hear from her voice that she started thinking you are a ‘stupid woman’.
