The little laptop that roared

This little laptop is perfect. It weighs only two pounds, looks good and has all the functionality you need for email, skyping, taking notes and checking on the net wherever a wireless connection is available. Battery life is about 3 hours. The webcam is not the best quality so you need to be in bright light for it to work properly. All said and done, this is a great little basic laptop for under $300.
Total Solid State Excellence

What it does well:
* Powers up from sleep immediately, runs XP SP3, Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Microsoft Office 93, Adobe PDF Pro, easily, and the little Atom processor has hyperthreading – it can run about three major apps with antivirus in the background at once without a significant performance hit – runs streaming video well. Haven’t tried conferencing with this, though.
* Eats very little power – if you set the power options appropriately, this unit can run up to 3.5 hours without affecting performance – once again, the Atom processor generates little heat, eats little power – the SSD drive doesn’t make a sound – the smaller screen I would think uses less power than the larger screens – puts itself into sleep or hibernation quickly according to the parameters you set.
* Extremely bright LCD – this unit has a screen brighter than my Nokia 810 and is visible even in direct sunlight. The brightness gradations are the widest of any mobile device I’ve used.
* Tolerates abuse – like the Nokia internet tablets, you don’t have to worry about bumps and thumps damaging the hard disc drive because there isn’t one – and because the unit weighs very little and isn’t big, it doesn’t “deflect” when you carry it like some of the larger notebooks will.
* Convenient – because it doesn’t weigh much, and isn’t sensitive to vibration, doesn’t generate much heat, and doesn’t have that disconcerting disc drive “hum”, you’re liable to carry this thing around, read with it in bed holding it up above you, or standing it up on its side, or putting it in a baggie and reading it in the tub – its also easy to lose in the backpack because it doesn’t have much inertia and is smaller than most textbooks.
* Versatile – if you like to read Adobe PDFs, the form factor of the screen is such that you can tip the device on its side like a book, and flip the screen rotation, then use the mouse to turn pages (sorry, Kindle), and this works for some streaming video as well.
* Other stuff – excellent wifi reception, convenient trackpad on/off switch just above the trackpad, two usb ports in okay locations, has two flash drive ports, keyboard is quite excellent, shape of the shell is minimalistic and attractive and easy to stow; download HP’s Youcam for the webcam after you “fix” it (see below) — makes the webcam fully functional; matches perfectly with the Nano V550 mouse using SetPoint.
Drawbacks:
* The webcam has this “dark film” over it – google how to remove it if you’re inclined – improves brightness by 100% – could use a kickstand – sound card is okay but not great – screen could tilt back an extra 15 degrees – or – doesn’t have a touchscreen or tablet-screen flip option (okay, I’m dreaming now).
But for 300 bucks, I think I’ll buy another one for someone else in my family because they keep using mine. This device has supplanted my Nokia.
Nice but not Quite Nice Enough

I purchased the hp 1010nr as a Valentines gift for the misses. Staples had a price mistake and was selling the unit for $225!!! I couldn’t resist giving the misses the ol’ Fred Flintstone bowling ball gift so I bit.
Things I like
The 2 biggest reasons to get the HP mini is its small size and great keyboard. HP makes the best keyboard on any netbook. It includes a full size right shift key. You’d be surprised how much of a difference one key will make for your typing experience. The size of the mini is great too. I don’t know how they get all of that functionality into such a small device. My internet router is bigger than this thing.
Things holding it back from greatness
The only thing I hate about this thing is the lack of battery life. We get only a couple hours of use with wifi on. HP is suppose to release an extended battery for the unit but it has yet to be seen. Also, the ext. battery will likely add a large lump to the back of the device. This would seem to take away from one of its biggest assets, its size. It also sucks that it doesn’t come with Bluetooth or N wireless or 1 GB of memory but I wouldn’t mind paying extra for those. The lack of battery life is holding this device back.
I don’t need these things but if you plan on using the webcam or VGA out port, know that the web cam is mostly useless (too dark) and the VGA port isn’t standard. To my surprise, it doesn’t have a network port. You can probably find a USB solution if you need wired networking, however. The smallish 8gb hard drive may pose a challenge to some.
Bottom Line
If you want a super small internet and emailing machine with the best keyboard in its class, this is the unit to get. If you want better battery life, more hard drive, standard ports, and extras like Bluetooth or N wireless, look elsewhere. I end up getting the Asus 1000HE for myself:

I’ll keep this review short and sweet. This netbook is my new best friend! I had wanted to get a laptop for the longest time and when I got my tax return I finally headed up to Best Buy to look at them. I saw this netbook and fell in love. I ended up getting the netbook, external CD/DVD drive, a memory card, carrying case, wireless mouse, optimization and 2 year warranty for a little under 700 bucks. Pretty much every thing I need! I recommend finding a package deal like I did but I just wanted to let everyone know how sleek, fast and great this mini PC is. HP is the leading producer for netbooks right now.
Ok but sometimes freezes and goes really slow

This is a very good laptop but sometimes it slows down and sometimes it goes so slow that it just stops loading that I have to shut it down with the switch. I was about to get the hp business notebook but I didn’t really need a disc drive and a very heavy laptop. I have a 1035NR model. It doesn’t concentrate on starting up and only takes 40 seconds to start up completely and 10 seconds to were it says Microsoft corporation windows XP. But I would give it five stars if it weren’t so slow.
great mini laptop

I was trying to decide between this laptop and the Acer inspire one. I really like this netbook the keyboard seems bigger than the other netbooks that I looked at and the screen is a great size if you have good vision. I would say that the only reason to get the Acer is if you need more hard drive space. Just remember that the SSD or solid state hard drive wont break if you drop it like a regular hard drive in the acer, plus SSD is faster. I would say the other main reason I chose the HP over the Acer is that i feel safer with an HP product, especially if something goes wrong with it.
Just the right size

I love my mini!!! I take this thing everywhere — it fits in my purse! This is a great little machine. I did buy an extended-life battery and an external DVD Drive to used when I need it. I use this mostly on trips and for typing documents on the fly. I do not notice any difference in size of the keyboard — works great for me. I highly recommend this netbook.
Great Machine

The keyboard is roomy; since the OS is XP everything downloads easily and runs like a piece of cake. It does run a bit slower if you try to pack it with too much software or too many files, but I use flash drives at the office anyway, making this a non-issue.
My only complaint is HP’s promise that its computers will recognize its printers. Not quite so. This will only install my Officejet with a cd, which would also have been seamless except that the cd I own is for a Vista. So hopefully HP will be able to give me the necessary software. Otherwise, for the price this is a joy (especially after Vista).
HP Mini 1000

I got this netbook for class to take notes. I wanted something lightweight and easy, and that’s exactly what I got! The battery even lasts through my 3-hour lectures. I do turn the brightness down though.
It has a great keyboard. It’s bigger than one would expect and easy to type on. The screen is bright and the webcam sharp. The mouse pad has cool scrolling dots on the right, and the side click wasnt a big adjustment.
It’s fast and mobile and has now become my main computer.
Great for travel

Bought this netbook to take on vacation and it served its purpose well. It will not replace your desktop, as the 8G hard drive is barely enough to hold essential programs.
Only drawbacks I found are the battery life seems short and the 512 RAM it comes with had to be upgraded. For the price, this unit is a great little travel companion.
Mini Workhorse

I have only used the Mini a few weeks, but I have no complaints. Needing a professional word processor, I deleted much of the included software and loaded Microsoft Word Office Edition. While the flash hard drive is somewhat limited, it is more than adequate for my use. I kept the included image processor, and have found it to be ideal for the limited image processing I need in the field. Serious image work can wait for PhotoShop and the big computer. Meanwhile, I carry a complete computing system that weighs about what my big laptop weighs alone.
Thinking about how much I have used the DVD writer in the field previously, I had planned to buy an external version, but so far, I have found external flash drives to be all I really need.
