Spontaneous cracked screens
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I researched this netbook extensively on Amazon and other sites and bought it over the Dell and Acer netbooks. After about 8 to 10 uses in the last one and a half months, I turned it on this morning to find a cracked screen. It had been in its neoprene case without dropping or other trauma to the unit.
Update, 8/31/09. Well ASUS came through and fixed my cracked screen under warranty. I am thankful, and feel a little guilty having prepared for a monumental battle with them if not. Fortunately, I only have to eat a little crow on this site and give this feedback that they came through for me. I am scared to use the Eee PC however, since I doubt they will replace my screen twice. It makes a handsome ornament on my desk though, roped off from others.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HA is a great little computer for anyone on the go. A laptop or desktop with a larger screen will still be better for certain tasks, but overall, I haven’t found anything my netbook won’t do.
Performance – The 1000HA comes with Windows XP, so I haven’t had to deal with Vista bugs. I’ve been satisfied with the pre-installed 1GB RAM unless I get click happy and open too many new tabs while browsing the Internet. The Eee PC can easily run multiple programs at once, but see my note below about how screen size can be a problem.
Battery Life – I’ve probably gotten 5.5 hours at most out of the battery, not the seven that Asus claims, but I also never turn off the Wi-Fi. The power usage settings are easy to change, and the Power Saving Mode is adequate for word processing or light Internet use, but set it to Super Performance for Skype or streaming video.
Keyboard – My hands don’t feel cramped on the Asus like they did on smaller netbooks I test drove. Switching between my netbook and the full-sized keyboards at work and home has been a breeze.
Screen size – The 10.1″ screen eliminates the side-to-side scrolling found in netbooks with 8.9″ screens. If you are running multiple applications at once, switching between programs can be tedious because there isn’t ample space to have decent-sized windows side-by-side or as many buttons in the task bar. And while general word processing works fine, I don’t recommend any netbook for a project where document design is important. Finally, a netbook may not be for you if you have vision problems. You can enlarge the type, but then you may have to scroll from side to side to see a full page.
Other features – The built-in webcam and microphone work great with Skype, and the on-board media card reader makes uploading digital photos a snap.
You may not want to give up your primary computer for the netbook, but if you need portability and performance, the Asus Eee PC 1000HA is a fantastic choice.
good quality cover,and nice color

it is good in size and everything. but just not as fast as I imagine, maybe I am too used to those duo core computers, but in general it is very good netbook
Surprised by problems but all is well now.

This was my second purchase of this item. I had previously purchased one for my son who is a college senior. I was so pleased with the performance and features of the first item that I decided to purchase a second unit for myself. When I received the second unit, it gave me fits. It immediately had hard drive problems with screeching and scratching sounds. The initial startup went ok but was very noisy. I thought it might straighten itself out but it got worse. First it wouldn’t shut down properly and then eventually it would not boot up. I finally gave up and returned it to amazon. I must commend amazon on their process for returning an item. That went very smoothly and I had a replacement unit within a few days and then mailed the defective unit back. The replacement has been working great with no problems at all. I love the portability. It’s great for my real estate business. I did buy an external CD/DVD drive to install software. I just hook it up when I need it and store it away when not in use. I’m pleased with my purchase and would buy it again.
Small but very usefull

The netbook is fine. It’s a good product. It travels well, has good battery life, and works like a charm. The wireless networking connects easily and finds networks without problem.
I use it more than my 14 inch laptop now. One con: the right shift key is too small and it’s too easy to hit the arrow key instead. As long as you’re aware of it, you can try to avoid it when typing. I had already researched this item, so I knew this when I bought it.

Excellent netbook

Excellent performance in its price range. One the reasons I bought it was to watch movies on long flights and it does this job well without a stumble. My movies are on the Eee hard-drive so I don’t have to bother taking along the external (not provided) DVD drive. I use over-the-ears headphones on planes. Battery life is fine for 2 movies, but I have not tested it until the netbook shut down.

This is something my husband had to have. It’s WONDERFUL. We use it several times a day and it’s easy to carry on trips and keep up with what’s going on. Bought the battery charger to go with it and it’s worthwhile. The carrying case that came with it keeps it nice and it’s handy.
Also less than enthused

Patrick L’s low review lists a couple things I agree with: the lack of caps lock indicator being one. I tried downloading the free “fix” and couldn’t get any indicator even so. I don’t understand his other more technical complaints, not being knowledgeable enough for that level of use.
However, I would add a couple additional things some users like myself might not be aware of. My main computer is a Mac. For almost seven years, I have only used PCs at work where we have experienced IT people to maintain, upgrade and fix hardware and software.
I see all those ads on TV claiming the PCs are cheaper than Macs? Well, yeah, up front cost for the Mac is definitely higher than for a PC.
However, here’s something to know, especially for the Asus Eee. The MS Office you get with it is a trial version. You do not own the software. You get 20 uses before you have to buy the software – and MS Office is not cheap!
You also get NO installed virus protection software. And this is can be an even bigger expense over time. If you are a student or staff at a college campus that provides free McAfee downloads and upgrades, then it’s free for the years you are in school. But otherwise you will have to buy an upgrade to your virus protection each month.
I bought this computer to run Qucken software and some games I like with no Mac versions. I wanted the small netbook for easy portability to use those apps. Now I am having problems with the one game I bought crashing the system to blue screen. I went to the Eee forums and others who had the problem were told to download Driver Detective. This is a free app. It will tell you what drivers in your PC have new versions available.
DD showed six – SIX drivers as out of date on my brand new Eee!! I tried downloading the one I thought would help with the video problem, but it refuses to download.
How much of this is due to my ignorance of computers, I can’t tell you. I do know my Mac was much less trouble out of the box when it was new, didn’t require any further purchases then or now (all upgrades except new OS are free downloads that I am notified about by pop up as they become available).
I can’t say my old Mac G4 is without recent problems due to OS Leopard and RAM probs, but at least I had all those years of totally trouble and expense-free use.
Just some info to keep in mind when you are weighing the comparative costs of Mac versus PC.
I do like the looks of the unit. They keyboard is great. The screen has a nice, if small display. People with problems reading small text should pass on it. IE 8 seems to work just fine on it.
I can’t say I would recommend the Eee to anyone, though. If you really must go with a PC and don’t have geek knowledge (or maybe even if you do), buy a full sized one with licensed software installed in it.
6 mos.: button failure, touch pad failure, hard drive failure

I ordered this laptop 6 months ago from Amazon, and was initially pleased except for a few things:
- battery life quickly dropped from “7-8 hours” to more like 3.5-4, even with screen brightness down and power-saving battery setting
- the right Shift key, as everyone says, is a phenomenal pain, and takes a week or so to adjust to
- the wifi signal was inevitably weaker than I would get with other laptops in a side-by-side comparison
About three months in, the left button below the touch pad stopped working. A problem, but I adjusted to using just the touch pad. Then the touch pad began acting up — not releasing when I released my finger, etc. I switched to using a portable mouse more often and got ready to send it in for a repair.
Not soon enough. The hard drive died two nights ago. No warning, no trauma, just a blank screen and no more whirring sound. The BIOS doesn’t find it, and ruling out a few other things means it’s fried, along with months of work. (Back your data up TODAY, people.)
This is the last Asus product I ever buy.
The product is FANTASTIC. [...]

This is my second Ausus EEE PC purchase. I enjoy the ruggedness and reliability of the products; almost went w/the Acer or Wind, but after getting this in my hands and looking at the Acer in the Stores (and since the Wind isn’t available in stores), I’m very happy w/my decision to go with the EEE 1000HA.
HOWEVER: A company/product is only as good as the company they keep. There was a rebate offered with the product; seems like they’re hoping you forget about it by the time the product arrives, because the only way I was able “register” was to get back to Amazon.com and download the paperwork to fill out, then make copies, then cut out the upc symbol, then mail it all in. Only, (dare I sound cynical) to have the package “lost in the mail” and to start over again. Old-school scumbag tactics. Look, Amazon: You had the purchase information, you know it shipped, you already have me online after ‘not’ sending the paperwork with the item, just have me click a couple of radio buttons and send me the check. Or, shucks, I’d even make it BETTER and EASIER for you and accept a credit on my next purchase. Hate the games. Hate the red tape. What, are you running for office?
That said, the product was great. The shipping was fast. Outside of the horrific rebate experience, I’ve always nice things to say about Amazon.com. Hope they figure out how to extend their good service and name to all aspects of their business.
DON’T BUY IT!

DON’T BUY THIS. The mouse button fails after a short time. EVERY eee I know of has this defect. It will be repaired under warranty ONCE only. The mouse button(s) are actually a cheap rocker switch. Must be unsoldered to replace.
Fantastic Netbook!

I purchased this computer as my primary machine and I couldn’t be happier. It can handle every task I need (although a touch slower than my previous ginormous laptop with Core 2 Duo Processor and Wireless N) the portable size definitely makes up for the difference!
I especially love the built in SD card that hides flush inside the unit – I have a very large capacity card inside and use it as a daily back up to my most precious data. The battery life is incredible and really lasts nearly as long as advertised! I find the screen size perfect…any less would be too small. My only gripe is the feet on the bottom make it so much thicker than it needs to be.
If using this as a primary computer, there are a couple accessories I would highly recommend – portable keyboard (I have the silicone roll-up style), optical travel mouse (I use a Microsoft cordless optical), and an external DVD drive. I am very petite with tiny hands and I even sometimes find typing a lot to be a challenge so the portable keyboard I found is very compact, inexpensive and does the trick when I have a lot of typing. The keyboard really is nearly full size of a standard keyboard but since I type all day on a standard size keyboard at work, using this one throws me off for fast typing. The portable mouse speaks for itself. And although I’ve had my Eee for 5 months now I just this week purchased an external DVD drive and only wish I’d done it sooner. It is a total pain to transfer installation CDs (Quickbooks, Roxio Media Creator, Office 2007, etc.) from their CDs onto an SD card…you get the idea. Oh, I also did the 2GB upgrade the day I bought it – super easy & cheap, definitely recommend this as well.
Bottom Line: fabulous deal on a great machine and everywhere you go people will marvel and be jealous of your teeny machine amazed that it can do everything their big monster can do! Everyone in my house is jealous and wants one of their own. My lucky 10 year old daughter will be getting one for Christmas this year (shh-don’t tell her, it’s a surprise!). Enjoy yours
Does all they say it will

This was purchased so that we could pack it in a day bag along with a video camcorder and digital camera, off-load images from the other devices, and go back for more. It worked flawlessly. And then because there was a network connection in the hotel room, we could watch the news from back home. If you don’t need a DVD-ROM because you already have one in a desktop, this is a well made 2nd computer that’s ideal for travel. Good price and delivery, too!
1000ha review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the asus eee 1000ha for only 5 days. So far, it’s exceeded all my expectations. The battery life is longer than I expected, I’ve been averaging about 6hrs with the webcam off and on the lowest brightness setting. Fully charged the battery meter said 7:11 hrs.
When I bought this netbook, I thought the screen would be glossy, however it is matte same as the 1000he. The glossy black paint makes the netbook look more extravagant than it is, however fingerprints do accumulate easily. As others have noted, my netbook also suffers from a flexy keyboard at the top left portion of the keyboard. One of the dislikes I have with this netbook is the trackpad. It is just overly sensitive, sometimes just moving it around registers as me double tapping it. The left and right select buttons are not at all stiff, however, I will just stick with my wireless mouse.
It has also taken me very little time to adjust to the smaller screen size and keyboard. The 1000ha comes with a button that allows you to change resolution from 800×600, 1024×768, and 1024×768 compress (which I havent seen on any except asus netbooks). The netbook’s performance out of the box also surprised me. The atom processor handles everything with ease, Google earth, openoffice, and even installed applications as fast as my normal laptop. I dont think I will upgrade to the 1gb of ram since I have 2 other computers that have run windows xp with 512mb ram, or 1gb ram for years. The asus netbook also came free of much of the bloatware most manufacturers put on their laptops.
The weight of the netbook while light was still a bit heavier than I thought it would be. The new 1005ha have a slightly lower weight by about half a pound. The speakers on the netbook by far exceeded my expectations. They are pretty loud and sound decent (netbook) wise and do not sound tinny at all. One of the cons of this netbook is the webcam. although it is 1.3megapixels, it is just horrible the picture is very dark no matter what setting.
Also one other thing I dislike is the battery indicator light. There is no way you can see whether the netbook is fully charged unless you go on windows to check. When I first received my netbook I thought that if the battery light was blinking it meant it was charging, and then when it remained solid it was fully charged. However, only after my 2nd charge did I realize that the light would be on whether the netbook was charged at 80% or 100%. PS the laptop takes about 2 ½-3 hrs to get to 100%.
The sleeve it came feels nice and plush, but I don’t think it provides much protection and I might spring for something else. Overall, I think the quality of this Asus netbook makes it better buy over similarly priced netbooks such as those from Lenovo and Acer. Personally I would stay away from Acer since I have a laptop from acer which lasted me less than 2 years, with the screen cracking, ac adapter breaking, and being able to pry open the chassis with my fingernail.
