Blu-Ray Drive Died After Warranty
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased the PS/3 a little over a year ago which at the time was ~$500. I bought it to play blu-ray movies only. With light use after the one year warranty expired, the drive will no longer recognize any type of disc. Based on Internet searches, this is a very common PS/3 quality failure. Sony wants $150 to send it in for analysis. The PS/3 is part of my home theater and is in pristine condition. Sony what a rip-off!! DO NOT buy this equipment. Sony quality has really gone down!! I have already purchased a LG-BD390 which also, unlike Sony, allows me to view Netflix movies.
died after 6 months light use

I used mine for a couple of hours on weekends and it lasted about 6 months and now there is no video out. This is a common problem. The games were great while it worked and the graphics were amazing. Too bad it Sony has all these quality control issues.
Somewhat of a dissapointment.. but its still a working ps3…

I was really excited to pull out my ps3 and start copying all my videos, pictures, and other media and see them on the big screen and also pay some games or maybe even watch a couple of blu ray movies or play some ps2? games? NOT! this version of the console was such a buzzkill to me i thought it was gonna be awesome i thought wrong, FIRST OF ALL the thing i noticed it did not have 4 usb ports it had only 2 AND another thing that really ticked me off is that there are no sd card slots!!! the cover is just stuck there, ouch ANND worst of all it has no ps2 backwards compatibilty… jeez they even took out some of the vents where the console got most hot and they also but shiny gray trim instead of chrome trim now that really ticked me as most of the things except the ps2 compatibility are obtainable via usb or mods I am still really dissapointed about this system. im going to invest in a used 60 gb rather than this dissapointment but hey im lucky enough i got a ps3
Some thoughts and observations…

Just wanted to share my experiences with the 80GB PS3. I’m sure you can get more detailed info from other reviews. I am not a fanboy, I can’t afford both systems(Xbox 360 and PS3), but have thoroughly enjoyed my PS3 and wanted to pass along my thoughts on the console.
From the minute I took it out of the box I was impressed. It looked like the black obelisk from 2001:A Space Odyssey. Easy to hook up HDMI connectors and power and away I went. In a few minutes I had created my PSN account and was online via the built-in WiFi and cruising around the PlayStation Store downloading demos and other assorted stuff. I had heard that there a charge for online access through an Xbox and it seemed like a little much…thankfully its all free through Playstation Network.
I was defintely impressed by the graphics and level of detail in the games and found the controls to be familiar, but as a PS2 owner I did’nt have a very steep learning curve.
Blu-Ray is a nice feature and considering you’d pay a couple hundred bucks just for a Blu-Ray player it’s worth the price of the PS3. Bluetooth support is also included for headsets and keyboards and who knows what else.
Anyway, I eventually decided I needed to add a larger hard drive and after some research on the Internet i was able backup my existing PS3 data to a USB Hard Drive (If you do this you will probably need to use a 3rd party utility to create a larger FAT32 partition than 32GB), replaced the hard drive (with a WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB), which was pretty easy and reloaded the data and PS3 OS info back on it from the USB Hard Drive. I’m leaving some steps out of course, but the point is you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.
There are some really great games available on the PS3, some of my favorites are Little Big Planet, Skate (and Skate 2), Burnout Paradise and Warhawk.
There are also a ton of original downloadable games that are truly a blast to play. Crash Commando, Fat Princess and Battlefield 1942 are the better one IMO.
Online play is a huge part of most of these games and for most it is smooth and consistent, but it can also be a drawback and that’s one of the things I don’t like about it.
Here are some Cons:
I know the facts are most people playing the PS3 are young hormonal males, but there is a real lack of variety of games and even fewer good family games. Little Big Planet is one exception and is almost great enough to make up for it, but it’s kind of ridiculous. Probably 80-90% of PS3 games invlove either killing or sports…the problem is only about 20% of those games are any good, the rest are knock-off, redundant filler. How many different games can you possibly have about killing aliens/zombies…or World War II? (heh, heh…Even though COD4 combines both of those for a mini-game it’s still one of the better ones)
Another thing is a lack of decent splitscreen or simultaneous multiplayer games. It’s like there is an entire generation of people sitting in dark rooms playing video games with people across the world that they will never see…sounds like a sci-fi movie or something. Again, I know it’s not designed to be a Wii, but that does’nt mean it can’t still be enjoyed by a family…together!
Another thing that really ticked me off originally is the lack of backward compatibility. I have about 50 PS2 games that I won’t be able to play on this monstrosity? Outrageous! Well, I’ve kind of gotten over that one. I still own my PS2 and could play the games, but after getting into the PS3 I don’t really want to…I still think about playing them, but when I sit down I always power up the PS3…I guess they got me good.
Overall I really enjoy the PS3 and the things that I don’t like about it have nothing to do with the console itself, more with the marketing and business side of things. The PS3 is an amazing machine capable of quite a bit more than I probably realize, but I’m happy with it as is…until they announce that the PS4 won’t play my PS3 games! Grrrrrr!
The better console in this moment
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The PS3 was my first gaming console and I am so happy with my purchase. I like the graphics and had compared the benefits of this console and the other ones and I think that this is the better gaming console that exists in this moment. The only complaint that I have is the size and weight.
Best bang for your buck

This PS3 is hands down the best value for your money. Just the games I can play on it is well worth the price, but being able to play blue ray dvds, and play online for free with my friends too? Thats just insane. I know I’m being Captain Obvious here, but this was the best thing I’ve bought this year and its worth every penny spent. If you dont have one yet you should get one right away.
More than I expected
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The PS3 is more than I expected out of a gaming console. It does everything I need it to do. The only glitch is the lack of backwards compatibility. It would have been nice to play all my PS 1 & 2 games on it also. The blue ray was definitely a good idea on Sonys’ part. The first blueray I watched was “Iron Man” and thoroughly enjoyed how the BD transferred the information (especially using the HDMI output).
Freakin’ Rocks!!

I bought my PS3 80gb used here on Amazon. Of course I took a risk buying expensive electronics used……but everything was perfect!! I even rec’vd an extra controller and the HDTV Cables. I have been an avid gamer since very young and fell in love with the 360′s graphics and game choices. I couldn’t really afford buying the PS3 until I saw the great deal for this used system. Now I proudly own both consoles and couldn’t be happier. Besides, it’ll be nice to have a system that won’t have a hardware failure every six months!! Also, I’m not worried of being locked out of game exclusives anymore!! I ended up paying $260 for the entire system. Figures, Sony just announced the price drop to $299 but this was unknown when purchased. System was in MINT condition!! I would Def recommend getting a used PS3, pending on sellers feedback, of course!
PS3 – load/Insert Disc issue after only 45 days of use.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Hey all, Since people get really heated about their consoles, be it a xbox360, wii, or what I purchased, a ps3, I want you to know this is coming from someone who is not a major game player. I am just an average guy who wanted a reliable entertainment console for my family and myself. After much deliberation between the PS3 and the Xbox360, I chose the PS3 because it was more of an all around entertainment console and even though it did have not a great library of games, I was fine with that since I am a very casual gamer and reliability mattered more due to the RROD issues that xbox360 users were experiencing. Well, after 45 days, the disc player stopped loading into the PS3 console. I am in the process of sending this into Sony for repair since it’s still under warranty. This is the first time I have ever done this for any electronics. Every electronic product has it’s failure issues. But a product should not have these issues after only 45 days. For this, I am rating this one stars for now. But I will see how Sony handles my claim and honors their warranty and update if needed. In hind site, I see now that all these console are pretty much the same be it a RROD issue or Disc read/load issue. But what matters most is how the company supports and stands behind their products. Microsoft has 3 years of part/labor for their xbox systems and Sony only has 1. Protect yourself and get the xbox360, even if it does break, MS will fix it fast and for free. I know this because all my friends have xbox360. I am the only one who opted for the PS3..:)Serves me right. Also, if you are weighing in that the technology is better for ps3. Think of it this way, what good is the technology if you can’t user it? MS may have created bad systems, but they have created way more efficient ones now with the Jasper chipset and they stand behind all thier old ones, which speaks volumes about the company. Hope that helps. Take care. Ethan.
Great System

Definitely does it for me…
I’m 15 years old and well I had a wii, the ps3 out did it 10 fold… Amazing graphics, blu-ray, online, you can’t get any better….. I’m not a halo or gears fan…. so I chose some simple games like mgs4 and madden, and oblivion, all classics that I can’t put down. Whether your a hardcore gamer or a causal, this is the system for you, I can’t get off it. hint: keep it in an open area without dust or just to keep it clean
Playstation 3

The Playstation 3 is everything I expected it to be and more. The graphics are beautiful and so lifelike. And it connects to the internet wirelessly which is great. The wireless controller is great also and it stays charged up a long time.
Feature wise, it has everything one could want in a play station. Well worth the money.
High failure rate on Blu Ray player
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My Blu Ray player, a 80g unit that was backward compatible, failed after 20 months of light use (5hrs of blu ray movies, 4-5hrs of regular DVD and 3hrs of PS3 gameplay a week). This has happened to a lot of people particularly in PS3′s with the 400a laser. I am unwilling to pay Sony the $155 to fix it(The fix comes with a crappy 3 month warranty – If the failure rate is less than 1% why such a mediocre warranty?) so I bought a laser from a third party and installed myself.
buy it while it last
