HP 1006 laserjet printer

Fabulous for the money. A no frills solid printer. The HP refills are expensive but good ISO aftermarket ones fit well and work well and are 1/3 of the price. Hooray !

Great, but not as great as previous model
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve been using this printer for about a month and it works very well. It’s probably the best little compact laser printer out there (my husband researched this to death). I had the previous model 1020 for about two years and never had any problems. Upsides: it looks nice and round, is compact so it fits in small spaces, never any problems printing with it. It’s also light. Quality of printing is very good. Basically great for students or as a home computer. Downsides: cartridges are expensive, but which ones aren’t. The pages can curl a bit, but not too much to be a problem. The reason I think it’s not as good as the previous model (1020?) is the following: the color (black/silver) is ugly and less cheerful than the last model (hello, engineer designers, how about some aesthetics or color???), and the whole feel of the plastic is more cheap. It just feels less sturdy and well made. And is also louder, which may be the result of this. Alas, the 1020 is no longer on market, so this is the next best option.

Another HP success.

I have owned HP products in the past, needed another quick, small, inexpensive printer, so I got another HP. Another success. Another satisfied customer.

No more drivers in ~3 years
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
HP has a verifiable history of not supporting its products when a new OS comes out, which is every 3 years or so. I’ve had 3 HP printers that have been abandoned by HP.

Latest example: I have just purchased a Windows 7 machine and realized that there’s no complete driver for an HP Inkjet I purchased in 2007 — I cannot clean heads, read ink levels, etc. HP response? “HP has no plan to develop the full feature printer driver for this operating system”.

Be forewarned!

DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 7!!!
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
There are no HP driver currently available for Windows 7 for this printer. The HP Tech Guy (Syd) told me there will NOT be one available until January 2010!!!!!

There are no generic drivers that will work either, according to Syd. I’ve tried other drivers and nothing works.

Pros: I’ve tried it on Windows XP and it works. It is quick, but you get an HP pop-up every time to confirm you actually want to print anything, especially from the manual feed loader. Prints are crisp. Fonts look good. It’s REALLY quiet! And I mean fast from an InDesign file with a lot of Postscript art overlapping one-another.

Cons: Constant Windos XP pop-ups wanting you to confirm you are printing something (just print the damn thing). It doesn’t work with Windows 7 and drivers are not to be released by HP until January 2010. No way. No how. Syd confirmed this, so there’s no doubt why this was being wholesaled (not by Amazon but by Big Box). Syd actually went on to say that no HP Laserjet will work with Win 7 right now????

Other thoughts: C’mon HP. You’ve had at least nine month to develop drivers for Windows 7. It was released to business as final code in July 2009. Final Release Candidate was in June 2009. What is the Problem? Syd said Microsoft had given vendors until January 2010 as a deadline, so that’s HP’s deadline. I don’t understand this. Fail.

If you are running XP still, this is a functional little printer for small 8-1/2 x 11 B&W laser needs (which was why I purchased it), but I’m taking it back to Big Box (okay Best Buy) for my $99 and tax refund.

HP you disappointed me here…

Must download latest driver on Mac OSX 10.3
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer for occasional use away from my primary residence. Inexpensive b&w laser printers are ideal for this type of service since there is no ink to dry out and no nozzles to clog. However, a word of warning, I strongly recommend downloading the latest drivers, currently 9-09, from HP if you are using a Mac!

Issue with Mac OS 10.6
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great printer, however the printer will not work via the airport extreme if you have upgraded the OS to Apple OS 10.6. The printer will work on the 10.6 but you need to use an older driver. I found that I had issues using it so I have connected it to my PC. Again The MAC 10.6 update, the printer will not work.

Forget the negatives
Rating:5 out of 5 stars

If you are buying this printer because you want a compact lasrjet and have no need for pictures, this is it. It replaced my old Laserjet 5L and I like the faster print speed and the cancel button. At $99 how can you go wrong

Forget using this with Mac OS X 10.6 – it won’t work!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This printer is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 and HP tech support say they do not plan to issue a driver that will be compatible.

Great Personal Laser Printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an outstanding printer. I use it at our golf club to print reports and scorecards on 27 pound cover stock. It sits right next to the computer so the printout can be examined and retrieved easily. I have also recommended this printer to two other people who bought it and are very happy with it. No more having to wait for inkjet printout or buy expensive ink cartridges. The toner in this unit lasts a long time and the cartridge is easily replaced. If you don’t need color for most of your printing, you will be better off with this laser.

Nice printer – now works with Snow Leopard
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this printer on my desk in my office for several months now, and it works very well in both Mac and Windows. It’s reasonably quiet and quite fast for being so inexpensive. The print quality is very good, and I’ve had no problems at all except for the lack of a Snow Leopard driver for the last few weeks.

HP has, however, made a new driver available for Snow Leopard and is part of the HP Printer Drivers Update 10.6.1 package that appeared in Software Update yesterday (9/22/09). This driver is a nice improvement over the earlier driver – the first page rolls out of the printer almost instantly, whereas before it would take a few seconds.

Overall, this is an excellent little printer.

Very Fast, Great Price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a very fast small laser printer. I have used many HP printers in the past and they were always very slow starting to print. I was surprised the first time I used this one. The price was great.

The only negative I can find is, due to the small size of the printer, the toner cartridge is quite small. For home use this should not be a problem. However, I bought it to use in a political campaign. Luckily the campaign only has slightly over a month to go so the small cartridge should not be a problem. In a longer campaign I would probably be replacing the toner too often.

you should seriously reconsider this purchase
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The summary – if you are thinking of buying this printer, and you print 130 pages a month or more, than you should seriously reconsider your purchase.

I just bought the refill for my little laser printer a few weeks ago, and although there are some plusses for this printer/toner combo, in light of a new product release the P1006/35A is overall a pretty bad deal nowadays. Allow me to explain…

The 35A toner cartridge [...] yields 1500 pages [...]. I knew this was a little high when I initially brought printer about a year or so ago, still, at that time it was not that much more than anything that would yield comparable results anywhere near that price point. And at that point, and up to just a few days ago, I would have rated this four stars, knocking one star knocked off for value. I will outline all the plusses of this printer at the bottom, but do want to mention that functionally there is nothing wrong with the P1006/35A combo, in fact it gets many things right. What changes my evaluation of this printer is the introduction of the HP 8500. The HP 8500 comes in a few different flavors, but the base one currently runs [...] on Amazon. And the single most important thing about this new printer is the cost per page of black prints -[...]. Now, a great cost per page alone means little, however, [...], it prints very well too. It is listed as one of their top five printers at the moment. Had I known this at the time I ordered the toner, I would have forgone this purchase and gone with the new HP 8500 instead, most likely for the aforementioned base model, or I might even have possibly have sprung for the wireless version for the convenience of it. Regardless, I would not have gotten this refill with such a drastic cost per page difference.

[...].

The good things about this printer: the purchase price is inexpensive; you can get one with the starter toner package for $100. It has a very small footprint. It’s been completely trouble free for me. It prints quickly. And text looks great from it. However, I would expect the same level of quality, plus affordable color prints from the 8500 (The cost of color is 1.9 cents per page). The larger footprint is not an issue for me. So, all in all, for my needs it no longer makes sense to keep buying these toner cartridges, as the cost per page is now prohibitively high given the now available 8500.

The P1006 is a great printer in many regards, but it has a huge drawback of being a bad long term value if you print even moderate amount. So that is what causes me to give this product a 2 star rating now.

A Great Little Printer !
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My eight year old HP laser printer wasn’t wired for my new computer so I was forced to replace it. I decided to stay with HP because the old one was virtually trouble free. On sale at Amazon, my P1006 was just under a hundred dollars. What a deal! This little printer does an amazing job and for anyone like me who doesn’t require heavy usage I highly recommend it. The only complaint, if you could even call it that, is that it’s a tad noisy. Other than that, it’s a definite winner.
