Garmin’s nüvi 260W combines the thinprofile and attractive price point of other nüvi 200-series GPS with directions in real street names and a wide screen that lets you see more of what’s around you as you drive. Garmin’s line on the device is that, the nüvi 260W gives consumers the most sought-after navigation features, while eliminating many of the premium add-ons. The result is a PND that simply gets you from point A to point B – reliably, efficiently, and with style. As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of a high-sensitivity integrated receiver, a slim, pocket-sized navigator with a gorgeous display, detailed NAVTEQ maps that lets  you search by name for more than 6 million points of interest like stores, restaurants or hospitals, and an easy, intuitive interface.

Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators.

Wider screen lets you see more of what’s around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen
3-inch

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen
4.3-inch

The nüvi 260W comes preloaded with maps for U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and features an  ultra-slim design.

Text-To-Speech
The text-to-speech feature of the nüvi 260W means that device automatically calls out street names (saying turn right on Main Street instead of turn right in 200 feet.). This feature lets drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways.

See More of What’s Around
The 4.3-inch backlit widescreen touchscreen on the nüvi 260W gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Smart, Powerful Design
The nüvi 260W is built with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 4.8 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The nüvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Garmin Lock
Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location

First Rate Map Data
The nüvi 260W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

In addition, the nüvi 260W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

Easy To Use Interface
Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the  Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs.

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras.

LUV IT
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
THIS IS THE EASIEST TO USE AND THE BEST VALUE FOR THE $ THAT I HAVE SEEN IN A GPS. EVEN A KID CAN FIGURE THIS OUT IN 2 MINUTES. Voices are a little gruff, but OK. This thing recalculates very quickly. Best buy for the money. No need to buy an adapter for the home, because it keeps a charge for several hours. Car adapter comes with the unit.

I like it…
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I wanted to give this product 5 stars but for some reason my mouse cannot click the stars, I must use the tab key and hit enter, then of course it will only let me click once. So what, you know I mean 5 stars. Well one reviewer said “for three reasons. 1) Ease of use. 2) Screen clarity. 3) Amazing accuracy.” I bought it cause the price was right when I compared it to Best Buy products. I tried believing my wife and I would share it between our two vehicles. You can pay more if you want it to tell you more, This one works for what I want and need, oh, and well enough I bought a second one so we could just keep one in each vehicle. Since my clicker didn’t work let me do this

Ease of use 5 stars, Features 3 stars, it could have told me where the best gas price was, and given me live traffic updates, but then it would have cost at least twice what I wanted to pay. Portability 5 stars. Points of interest accuracy, don’t know, I don’t like people or machines telling me what I should be interested in, I tell it where I want to go; it gets me there. Voice 4 stars, but truly I haven’t totally decided on the voice. Check the page, theres a chart, they all have different features and add-ons you can buy.

My first GPS…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I chose to purchase this unit after researching it on the web. The positive reviews and price were big influencing factors. So far, my husband (who is electronically & directionally challenged) used the Garmin 260 to arrive successfully at two locations out of state. We are most pleased with the ease of use, as well as the clarity of sound & display. No problems with connecting with satellite as yet, as other reviewer have noted. Very pleased with purchase!

The only negative related to this product was that the description did not include that the car adapter was included in the package. I had ordered a car adapter separately but then had to return it because I did not need it

Love it but a little leary
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We drove to the Vulture Mine in Arizona and the Garmin got us there just fine. However, when heading home I clicked on “Home” and it took us way way south of where we wanted to go. I don’t know what happened to it and wonder if I can trust it in the future.

nice GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am glad I purchased this product.

Was warned by a friend to make sure it announces street names for turns instead of just

telling you to turn. That is a great feature.

Since the price is coming down, it is a good buy but

if you can hold off buying one, these things may become obsolete

if your smart cell phone will do all this and more.

Newer models will let you know about traffic which this one does not do.

Then you will not have to worry about removing it from your

car each time you park.

Very Disappointed.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am very disappointed with this item. The information it gives for points of interest ie. restaurants and shops has been incorrect 98% of the time. We were on a recent weekend trip and not one of the restaurants out of 4 were where were we were directed. We spent over an hour driving around because we were going by the directions given by the Garmin. I had borrowed one from a friend a couple of months before I bought this one and it showed the “speed limit” on the roads, which this one does not. Just another reason I am thinking of sending it back. My son-in-law has another brand and it has been much more reliable. I would not recommend this item.

I bought this portable GPS after being impressed with a similar model being used by a friend. Have only used it for two long distance trips thus far. For the most part, it was great. However,it doesn’t seem to be able to distinguish a road detour from a traveler’s deliberate change in direction. On 85 South there was roadwork and traffic was shifted to a parallel road. The GPS saw that as an entire change in routing. The “manual” is not very helpful for use of anything but the basic features. Nevertheless, I am still hopeful that I’ll be able to figure out the other features and am looking forward to trying them. For the price, I think that an A/C adapter should also have been included.

Garmin 260W GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really like this GPS unit. My in-laws have a Tom-Tom that I have borrowed and I like the Garmin better. It is more user friendly. I purchased the Garmin 255W for my son that I really like also. I would recommend either one.

260W is an original, but remains the best
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have owned my Nuvi 260W for 2.3 years. My wife wanted one for herself so I started researching GPS’s to find the best one since it’s been 2 years for me. After all my research, for the price, functionality, size of screen, the 260W is still the way to go. Nothing fancy, no features that are like “oh…it does that?”, but you never use it. It’s a straight up workhorse GPS with a big screen.

returned product
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Actually, I returned this product to Amazon because it did not allow trip planning by interstate route numbers or the saving of trip details (other than begin and end points). What was most impressive was the ease, pleasure actually, of returning a product to Amazon. I was amazed that they even returned my expedited delivery fees! Did not like the product much, but Amazon.com gave me the warm fuzzies!

Maps out of date
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
THe roduct was OK but has the same plug in connection to the back of the unit that has been a problem on previous models. Was disappointed to see the maps were out of date.
