LIFE SAVER
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
A week after I received this product, it broke. I was in such a panic because I was using it for vacation. I filled out the ‘return’ online; they shipped another one immediately; and sent me a prepaid label for the return. What a lifesaver when you’re in an area you don’t know very well. I use it regularly.

poor battery life
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
this is a great gps if the battery life was better. it’s easy to use. gets me where i need to go. i bought a refurbished unit and sent to the manufacturer for repair within a month as the battery didn’t charge at all. i think tomtom sent me another refurbished one which worked ok for a month then the same problem occurred again so i have to keep it plugged in when in use. would be better if these things use insertable lithium batteries.

This device will cost you $79 more then they tell you

The maps on the device are at least 7-9 quaters old. You will have to update maps. It costs an additional $79. FYI

Not worth the money

Purchased this as a gift for my sister(refurbished). She was on a trip and lost the signal for nearly 2 hours. Thank goodness she knew where she was going.

Piece of junk, horrible warranty service
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
TomTom is without any doubt the WORSE GPS unit/ Customer service / Warranty service of ANY GPS manufacturer.

My first TomTom the on/off switch was so flimsy it would turn the unit on by itself while it was sitting in the car or on a desk. TomTom finally replaced that one under warranty, but the reconditioned repair they sent runs out of battery power after 45 minutes without being plugged in. When turned off fully charged, the battery will be completely dead within a week WITHOUT the unit being turned on.

I called TomTom customer service, and their warranty department tells me they WILL NOT WARRANTY REPLACE a GPS unit that runs at least 30 minutes under battery power. Also, they told me it was normal for their GPS units to run the battery down within a week WHILE TURNED OFF, and will only replace it under warranty if the battery dies completely within 2-3 days while the unit is turned off.

To recap, TomTom warranty says a fully charged battery only lasts 30 minutes, and a fully charged battery will die after 2-3 days with the TomTom GPS TURNED OFF.

So, if you want to be like me and have a hundred dollar paperweight after purchasing it only 10 months ago, buy this GPS for yourself, or even as a gift! Otherwise, I would avoid this manufacturers products entirely.

p.s. TomTom customer service, if you are reading this, my case number for the facts in this review is 091006-000350. I would not want anyone to think I was making any of this up.

First GPS is a hit
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Recently bought this as a first-time GPS user (in the car, at least). I am having a great time with it. I have discovered new routes to places I go all the time. Have used it several times to avoid traffic jams. Only thing I would improve would be that the name of the street you are going to turn onto should be said outloud. You can look at the screen and see it written on the bottom what street you will turn onto next, but it would be nice to hear it. Other than that, I love it. Even got Mom to buy one after bringing mine on a trip with her.

we get lost if we rely on this GPS system. We tried it to a familiar places and gave us wrong directions, not worth buying. Buy something else.

screen clutter
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I found that there was so much information around the outside edges that it made the screen area less than my current 3.5 in model, also I missed the analog compass/ altitude screen that my Magellan has

make sure that you understand all conditions applied to the purchased product
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The product itself is a pretty decent and functional GPS if it HAS the most recent maps. One feature that it misses is that it cannot toggle automatically between day and night display modes like the Garmin GPSs do, a feature that I found useful. Most important thing is to make sure that you understand all of the conditions applied to purchasing a refurbished product from TomTom. So call TomTom first before ordering and ask SPECIFICALLY whether or not the 30-day free map-update policy applies to the product that you’re interested in. Not all of the refurbished products come with the 30-day free map-update offer (most of them do not) as some of the reviews suggested. I’ve learned this in a hard way although I’d indeed called before ordering to make sure that there exists a 30-day free map-update policy generally but without asking specifically for this product. The latter was the cause for the trouble that I’ve been through since no one at TomTom volunteered informing me of the details. But I do give the credit to a manager from TomTom who has offered me a free map update to their 2nd to the last version of map software after I’d escalated the issue to him after having spent much time on the phones and emails. The explanation was that TomTom was bound by the contract they have with the map software company. Their technical assistance is also professional and competent once they have determined that the free map update applies to your purchase. Finally, be aware of the potential issue of disk space for the new version may require more space than available on the product.

Additional $40 if you want latest maps
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Packing my unit for return to Amazon. After speaking with TomTom tech support, they refuse to give me any kind of free update for my maps. Unit looked brand new with full documentation, including “Latest Map Guarantee” pamphlet. When trying to use the code provided, TomTom Home software says “guarantee expired.” Tech support says, no free map updates for re-furbished units. One time update is $40 and another $40 if you want regular updates for the coming year. Not happy with Amazon for not highlighting this issue, nor TomTom for throwing away a customer with their greedy attitude.
