No free map updates, better to buy new than refurbished
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The out-dated map makes it inefficient as you can’t really find the latest POIs and get better routes. The latest map guarantee is not being honored here :( I would have purchased a new or a gps from other company have I known (as to get updated maps you need to pay a hefty price, makes it senseless to buy refurbished).

Easy to use, similar interface but more options than Garmin, but very outdated map.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 205 that my wife is using in Singapore. Works great and have consistent and regular free map updates from malsingmaps. Even when I travel overseas, there are plenty or free map resources on the internet that basically provides maps for almost any place u need. So I basically have overseas maps for about 10 countries in my Garmin back home. Can’t bring it out to US this time as my wife badly needs it. It also takes a micro SD card for memory expansion.

So abit disapoointed when I am in the US for an extended business trip and bought this really cheap TomTom One 130s. Didn’t want to spend too much money for another GPS since my 205 is great. When I found the map resource was bad, it was ok since I only need to use it in the US. But I only found out after buying that map updates are not free. That really disappoint me. Even the “tool” – “guranteed latest map” stuff that some of the guys say out there is only applicable to a lucky few. Mine said that the “latest map guarantee” has expired. So updating was not possible.

But 1 thing I like about the TomTom over the Garmin is that it is able to get satellite signal even indoors. Garmin units can’t do that. Indoors and u lose the signal on the Garmin.

Another good thing is that although it is refurbished, it looks completely new.

Overall I rate it a 3. 1 star for each for satellite signal quality, new-look for a refurbished unit and functionality and options. The 2 missing stars come from outdated and no-free-updates, as well as no memory expansion options.

I will probably get the TomTom a singapore map and use the Garmin for travel instead. Garmin is good when u need to travel more and more free map resources.

I bought this for a friend as a gift and she really loved it.

It arrived more prompt that I expected it to and also in good shape.

It works well and looks brand new.

Great Buy!

I purchased this about a month ago. I found it extremely easy to use. I know some people are saying that they did NOT get a free map update. I connected mine to the computer as soon as I got it. It connected to the TOMTOM home page right away and asked if I wanted the free update. It took awhile to update, over an hour. You can downlaod other points of interest and voices. However can be very time consuming, after you choose to download a new POI or voice it kicks you back out to the menu page, where then you have to go through all the pages again to get to where you left off. Also only the computer voices (TOM or SAM) will say the street name.It will automatically recalculate directions if you miss the street, not just say turn around. For the cost its an extremely GREAT BUY. My boyfriend has even bought one after he saw mine and plans on buying another for his parents for christmas.

Old Map with no free update
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The GPS is alright – not many features, but low price.

HOWEVER… REFURBS DO NOT COME WITH THE NEW MAP GUARANTEE.

From their site: Latest Map Guarantee does not apply to TomTom Road Tested (refurbished) models.

I have a map installed that is over a year old. If I knew I was going to have to spend another $50 I would not have purchased the refurb,

Might just return it.

A new one (as of today’s date) is on sale for $112 TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator WITH THE FREE UPDATE

Map Updates
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought my 130S about a month ago and have been using it almost daily since. Other than the once-in-a-while slightly strange routing it has performed very well. It always gets me where I want to go, even if the route is slightly different than I’d have picked on my own. The unit picks up satellites well, even in my house. I connect to TomTom Home once a week to update satellite positions, so it connects well.

The reason I’m writing is that when I got the unit my maps were 6 quarters old. I did the Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee method to update my map and was told that my unit was not eligible for the updates. I checked this option each week and got the same message every time. Yesterday, after having the unit for more than a month, I tried again and was pleasantly surprised with a notice saying that updates were available. So, I downloaded the updates and now my maps are current. Anyone know what’s up with that? I’m much more happy with my unit now that I know I have up-to-date maps.

The other thing I like about the unit is the option to mount it on my dashboard, rather than on the windshield. The legal windshield location in California is very inconvenient to use. I stuck the provided disk on the top of the dashboard in a convenient place and the unit is now easily accessable with no obstruction of my view of the road.

This is the 2nd time that I bought a factory refurbished unit. I will never buy refurbished again because they are not returned to factory standards as advertised.

Maps over year old? Now I have to pay $40 for updated maps?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Just received my second TomTom product a couple of days ago!

It’s a refurbished TomTom One 130-S; when I synced it the first time with my computer, the TomTom Home software told me that the maps were “over four quarters old” asking me to purchase a subscription.

A phone call to supervisor George (we do not give out our last names, and employee ID!) resulted in the fact that refurbished items “which may have been on the shelf for a long time” cannot be updated, and I would have to pay for it in full.

This is my second TomTom One refurb, and the last time, there was not problem calling customer service and getting an updated version, at least for one time… I was very happy with the product, and its performance.

After I explained to TomTom that I am a frustrated customer, and would like to escalade my demand for updated maps, (mentioning that I would write up reviews stating how this was being handled) he hang up on me “is there anything else I can help you with?”

This is not a way to treat customers! Now I have to pay $120 to get a fully functioning device?

We just finished a trip to Glacier National Park, Whitefish and Columbia Falls, Montana. The Tom Tom performed very well and was especially helpful in getting us around inside the City of Spokane. GPS units are very helpful in getting you out of difficult spots. The major fault with all of the sales material on the Amazon site is that no where does it say that you will have to buy the map updates. And you will have to buy the back issues depending on when your unit went into service. This being the case, you would be better off paying more and buying a brand new unit. Customer service got my update price down to about $60, but that was the best they would do. Updates are about $40 a year. I am going to have to buy six quarters, or about sixty dollars.

Also true: I guess that you could buy the unit and never update the maps. We have a dozen old maps around our house and the information is mostly accurate. The Tom Tom might serve you very well if you never went anywhere where new streets go in.

A best buy

I purchased this TomTom for my wife who was flying into New Jersey, renting a car, and driving into the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, then back to the airport. She has ner used a GPS before, but said she had no trouble figuring out how to put in her destinations. She stated that the turn by turn instructions with street names were clear and easy to understand.

Then I loaned the TomTom to my mother in law to help her find a wedding in Louisiana. She is not too tech savvy, but had no trouble whatsoever.

I have played with it driving through my hometown and noticed one or two streets incorrectly named, but no big deal. I did go to TomTom’s website to see if I could snag a free map update as some reviewers state they were able to do, but with no luck. This refurb unit has maps “four quarters” old and TomTom wanted something like $79 for new ones. Heck, if I had that kind of change lying around I wouldn’t have bought a refurbished unit in the first place!

So let me get to the point: For the money I can’t imagine getting a nicer GPS, and one that tells you the street names too. So what if you can’t upload new maps for free. How often do you need to go to some newly developed street anyway? Mainly you use a GPS to find somewhere in a city or state for which you are unfamiliar. Snatch up this TomTom before they sell out!

GREAT GPS

I wanted a GPS but didn’t want to spend a lot as I don’t need it often. This GPS fits the bill. It is very easy to use and is very accurate. I’m very glad I chose this TomTom and I would recommend it to anyone who asks.

Old Maps + No Updates = Not Worth It
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I originally bought a TomTom ONE 130 and was able to get the Latest Map Guarantee etc. but when I realized the 130 didn’t say street names I returned it for a 130S instead.

Now I have the 130S and the maps are 1.5 years old, and THERE IS NO LATEST MAP GUARANTEE. I called TomTom and they told me I “was lucky” that the 130 I bought let me update maps but there is no way to get those maps on my 130S and THERE IS NO LATEST MAP GUARANTEE on this one.

I told them I was going to return this back to Amazon since I didn’t want to keep it and that by choosing to do this they were losing a customer but THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT MAKING THEIR CUSTOMERS HAPPY.

So moral of the story: I’m returning this. DON’T BUY IT UNLESS YOU WANT OLD MAPS.
