Wiring/recharging issues
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My Nuvi 200 survived the initial 1-year warranty. A few months later, the power started shorting out. Evidently, the minor torque created by the cord is enough to break the internal connection between the power cord and the battery. I opened the little bugger up and noticed that the only connection to the battery is through a small, metal cage which sits upon the charger. This is connected to the main body on one side and not very well. The single point of connection had been severed due to the simple swing of the power cord!

I don’t recommend this product.

If you are looking for a GPS, please consider one of the products that has a much stronger power connection. While this one should last the warranty, it will likely break soon after with limited usage. The Garmin website allows people to ship an ensured package back to the dealer (shipping roughly $10-20) and have it repaired for $50. Not worth it in my opinion. I’m going to try some surgery on it, but will likely end up buying a different product.

Easy to set up
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just got mine, and had it all set up in a couple minutes in the parking lot. Nice compact size. Easy to use. The screen is not quite bright enough in direct sunlight, but still readable. The arrow and car icon that show you where you are, are a bit too large for the map in zoomed out mode. Other than that, it works great.

great entry-level gps
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received this as a gift last year, and after a year of use, I give it an unqualified thumbs up. I used this on several long distance road trips, traveling well over a thousand miles each time, without once consulting my road atlas. I can only remember one glitch and the unit got me back on track without too much trouble. Although street names are not spoken, the directions, voice, etc are all clear, and locks onto the maps very quickly. It was very helpful in planning out my route and deciding where to make our stops. The unit is lightweight and I carry it in my purse.

My one big caveat is to check your maps and make sure you update them immediately, if necessary. I think Garmin will only allow the free update within 30 days of purchase. Although the 200 was purchased in July 2008, the maps were not up to date (2006 maps) and I ran into problems updating them on Garmin’s website and then forgot. By the time I remembered, it was no longer free, and it just wasn’t worth the cost to me.

Update 08-30-09: I just got a message on my GPS from Garmin that my maps are out of date and that my maps are 2008 maps!!! This I can’t believe as one of the start-up screens says NAVTEQ 2006. Additionally, many local (Houston area) POI’s are not in the database, although they were built at least 4-5 years ago. I’m still satisfied, although I believe the map updates are a scam on the consumer. IMO, you should be able to get free updates for the entire initial warranty period.

Moving into the 21st Century

What a neat thing! We live in a tiny town in Wyoming and most of our shopping has to be done somewhere else, usually many miles away. This unit has made my life much easier! And it is really easy to use. If I can use it, anyone can.

BEST PRODUCT, BEST PRICE
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
You can not beat this GPS. We use ours all the time and are extremely happy with it. I love the features-you can save destinations to your “favorites” and can search local shopping areas or restaurants. I also like how if you go off course it will say “recalculating” and will point you in the new direction. My Mom’s more expensive GPS will not do this.

I highly, highly recommend this product. For the price, you simply cannot beat it!

GPS
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this device for my wife, but used it on our move to Florida and a few times in Florida to learn my way around. It works fine, but doesn’t have any way to update the database to incorporate new streets and roads, which is a problem living in an area that is always changing.

Not enough memory
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Very poor product. The unit does not have enough memory for updated maps. Buy a TomTom instead.

Old maps in new device
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’m very disappointed to find that the maps in my newly purchased Garmin nuvi are over a year old. This is according to device itself, which informed me that new maps are available for purchase. Other than this huge disappointment, I love the device.

Good Product–But lacking Mexican Cities
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought the Nuvi at a great price at Amazon ($134.00 & free shipping), so I didn’t expect top of the line features or performance. I must say that I am very pleased with the unit.

The only disappointment was the need to purchase and download the City Navigator program for Mexican cities. I had hoped that this would be included, since the product had been advertised as a “Nuvi 200 Mexico”. After several tries with extremely long waits (25 min)–I finally got to talk to a real person on their support line. He explained that my unit has Mexican highways, but for city navigating, I would have to purchase the additional City Navigator program for $49.95

The preinstalled highway maps are not at all helpful, since they refer to highway numbers which are rarely indicated with signage. And of course, once you enter a city of any size, you need specific instructions to thread your way through the disorder– and lack of signage– to continue on the highway you want for your particular destination. This was completely lacking until I did the City Navigator download.

Other small details: the unit does not distinguish one-way streets, and can route you heading the wrong way on a one-way street. When doing a search for a city with a long name, such as San Miguel de Allende (21 letters and spaces) you have to type in more than 15 letters before the unit kicks in, and provides the name. I cannot understand why the recognition does not come sooner on such a long name if it is a repeated city search.

There are many hidden features which are helpful and fun that I am still becoming familiar with. Overall this is a great entry-level product, and I am enjoying it very much.

GPS Review
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was surpised at how easy it is to use the Garmin. It proved its worth last week

when we had a lot of traveling from one location to another on Long Island N.Y. and there were Nor’Easters on two days so we could not see the exit signs. The Garmin made it very easy to know when we coming up to the exist and especially when to stay to the left or right lanes.

Ocasionally it would get confused and give us invalid directions. Yesterday when traveling from my house to my cousin’s house in Eastern Mass., at distance of 31 miles, the GPS could not get the satellite and thought that we were still in the Bronx, N.Y.
