Still Great, but NOT Worth a Trade for your PS3 Fat
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I originally had a 60gb original release PS3. That machine did EVERYTHING…(like the Sony commercial says). It had backwards compatibility, a fantastic upscaler for dvds, terrific Blu-Ray playback, touch sensitive buttons etc. I ended up selling it because I didn’t play it that often. Then, with the release of several new games, I decided to buy a PS3 again and decided the 120gb slim would be a good option.

With the old 60gb fat PS3 I never noticed any heating issues even though I had it in a media cabinet (which has air flow through the back). Upscaling was FANTASTIC, and I only had the system freeze once (on Assassins Creed). I never had Fallout 3 freeze even once. PS2 playback was awesome to get up to date on games like the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

When I set up the Slim PS3, the first thing that crossed my mind was that it looked “cheaper.” The matte finish in place of the glossed black is a cheaper plastic material. The replacement of the touch senstive buttons with the physical buttons also looked like a way to save some money. However, these issues are completely up to personal preference. The touch sensitive buttons were neat, but the physical buttons are a lot quicker for eject and power on/off. They also look well constructed.

The real difference, and my major gripe, is that the Blu-ray optical drive was REPLACED for the PS3 slim. This, in and of itself, is nothing to be concerned with. Electronics are constantly being redone to cut costs and deliver the same performance within a smaller space. The PS3 slim Blu-ray drive, however, is NOISY. Please do not confuse this with the FAN. Once the system finishes loading, the fan is completely silent. The heating core is much more efficient in the slim and definitely does not heat up as much. (Even though, as stated before, heating was never an issue even with my 1st release fat PS3 and I RARELY noticed the fan unless I played for over 5 hours straight). When using the Slim PS3 for the first time I immediately noticed a weird noise when loading movies and games. When reading a disc it makes a “Printer-like” noise for about 6-10 seconds. The PS3 fat made no audible sounds at all. In games it typically does this during menus, cinematics, and loading between levels. In movies it usually does it when scanning/loading sections. This does NOT affect playability at all. (The slim is only minimally slower than my 60gb fat). Depending on the game though, it might load a LOT and you will hear this “reading” noise a LOT. If you are playing a movie/game quietly it is definitely noticeable. At first it had me worried that there was something wrong with my system. However, after EXTENSIVE research and contacting Sony representatives I have found that this is COMPLETELY NORMAL for the new drive in the PS3 slim. It isn’t a major deal, but does make me concerned with the longevity of the system.

In addition, the cheaper plastic casing of the PS3 slim expands as it heats up (over the course of an hour or 2) and makes some small ticking noises once you turn it off to cool. Other people complaining about this online say it sounds like the noises a car makes when you turn it off and it is cold outside. I believe this is a very accurate comparison. Sony said this is “normal expansion and contraction of the case.”

All in all, this system plays movies and games great. I had Call of Juarez:Bound in Blood freeze once on my slim, but I believe that was due to encoding. Sony said that a lot of hardware elements have been replaced with software on the PS3 slim to keep some of the same readability features, but I cannot really tell the difference. I give this system a 4/5 only because it is definitely not constructed as well as the old 60gb PS3 fat. It is still an EXCELLENT system, but…like everything in electronics…you sacrifice a little bit of the quality in order to cut down a little bit on the price. If you have a PS3 fat, I would personally not upgrade until your system is out of warranty and if it ever bites the dust. If you have the 60gb system…I would pay the $150 to get it fixed if it ever breaks rather than spend the $300 for this. If you are looking to purchase a NEW system, and do not mind the weird creaks, then get this one for the warranty (and because I am sure parts for the older models will quickly become scarce.)

A great system with much more than meets the eye. Of course the playstation, but then blu-ray, internet, many more extras. Take this with a grain of salt though — I have not been a serious gamer since Donkey Kong…

After weeks of hearing about how much my boyfriend “needed” the PS3, I finally found it on Amazon for an affordable price and purchased it. It came quickly, good product. it is much quieter than the xbox and the blue-ray player feature is very handy.

Perfect Xmas present for my family!

Of course, I had to try it out to make sure

it works. I’ve been trying it out probably

way too much since I purchased Guitar Hero

World Tour more recently. I originally bought

PS3 for games for my son when he visits, and

because it had Blue-ray for my wife & I.

Turned into my new toy, & hard to put down.

Works great with our new LG HDTV!

Delivered promptly and way worth the money!

Highly recommended.

There is absolutely no reason for Sony not to include backward compatibility unless they have decided that they did not want to sell many of these machines. The Playstation is very over priced to begin with and then to not include backward compatibility is blaspnemy!!! I will never buy another Sony gaming system, unless they come to their right mind and remember the consumer!!!!!

Outstanding System
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After an exhaustive amount of research I’ve determined that the PS3 SLIM is a much better deal/system than the XBOX360 ELITE. After owning the PS3 SLIM for about a week I’ve determined I’ve made the right choice. It does it all and with style. And yes, for those who care, the US version is DUAL voltage, 100 – 240V input, despite it saying 110V on the system. I live in Germany and plugged in my US version PS3 SLIM and it’s working great! So grab a PS3 SLIM while suppies last.

Hard to imagine a deal like this a year ago. PS3 was bloated and overpriced and now they are back to where they should have been. Trouble is – is that it may be too late. On Black Friday I was in a store in the afternoon and all the Xbob 360 bundles were gone, but they had shelves of the PS3 120 gb holiday bundle just sitting around looking lonely. The amount of game available on the shelves is a telling sign as well. Not only are ALL the PS3 game just sitting there, they have one full cabinet less titles to choose from.

It sure seems Sony will have to recreate the video game to get out of last place, or get out of the business altogether. Either way dont get a PS3. It will either be old fast or Sony wont support it anylonger, real soon.

Best NETFLIX enabled blu-ray player ever!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m not much of a gamer. I got a sweet deal on an HDTV and wanted a blu-ray player and I have netflix. The PS3 slim works awesomely with netflix watch instantly feature. You can instantly watch everything on your instant queue and more movies. You do have to go online to add the movie you want to see to your queue if its not already on a list, but how convenient, the PS3 also can browse the web.

It also streams media from computers on your wireless network. Works well with windows 7 using WMP, and on windows vista using a program called Tversity. You can instantly access your music and videos on your computer, and pictures. Tversity also lets you access youtube vids too.

oh yea… and the games are awesome too :)

get MGS4

bottom line, the PS3 slim is an awesome hub for a home theater setup, if you need a blu-ray player

I recently recive the ps3 slim version and what can i say… i’ts just perfect, way much cooler than the fat version and of course there’s no way that the xbox can compite with this machine, the so mention noise i not true it’s very quite actually the PSN is great a lot of free demos and the online play mode is out of this world, very easy set up and don’t get me started about the blu-ray technology and the HD, this is the ultimate fun-entreteiment all in one SONY creation, like all that they do.

Playstation 3 is the best system
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Playstation 3 is the best gaming console on the market. It tops all other gaming consoles by far. It has better games and better graphics and a can do hundreds of things. The xbox 360 is trash and they had a huge callback on there systems where as PS3 is better in quality. If you open the XBOX 360 is trash in comparison. Xbox 360 charges for internet and a hard drive, ps3 has it but in and the online gaming is free. PS3 has a built in wireless and ton of option to make the system fit your personality. It even allow you to change the operation system and install windows XP, now that cool. PS3 has built in blue ray so you can play blue ray movies. I purchased the first playstation 3 and came with backwards compatibility so I can play ps1, ps2, and ps3 games. And much more….

Stopped Working and Sony Won’t Fix It
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought a Sony Playstation3 and it has worked flawlessly until around a month ago. After their system update, 3.01, none of our game discs would play anymore (they would freeze after a few minutes of play). I emailed Sony about this and they said I need to send in my system and pay them $150.00 to fix it because my system is over a year old (ie, warranty expired). After checking their forums and other gaming forums for a cheaper fix, I discovered that hundreds (thousands?) of others were having the exact same problem after the 3.01 update.

After a month of waiting/hoping on a fix in a new system update from Sony, a week ago it arrived and we downloaded it (3.10 was the update number). Well…that made things even worse. None of our game discs would load so we could play them at all (at least before they’d play for a few minutes). Their forums began filling with countless people who now had completely broken PS3 consoles, so I knew I wasn’t alone. You can easily Google this to see that I’m being honest.

I called Sony’s customer service number and “John” had me to a system restore of some kind to try and fix it. That didn’t fix the issue(s) and he said there was nothing else they could do and that I’d have to send in my console and pay them $150.00 to fix it. I told him that I should not have to pay anything since it was clearly their update(s) that caused the console to break, regardless of my warranty expiring. Sony broke my working console (and thousands of others) and are now trying to get a whopping $150 from me? I don’t think so.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had a bogus Sony product, but the other time it happened I wrote it off as…sometimes a company that mass-produces products will have some come off the assembly line as bunk. I was forgiving and gave them more of my money….but the buck stops here. I will NEVER give them another cent of my money again and I strongly encourage you to not buy Sony products.

I realize that I’m some guy you don’t know, but all I can say is that I’m a nice guy who is being honest with you about my experience. I have a $300 paperweight and Sony has cost us a lot of money with their error….we have Blu-Ray discs and PS3 games that we can no longer play or view. That’s not to say that Samsung, LG, or one of the myriad of other companies who will be getting my money from now on won’t screw me over….but apparently this is all I can do and just hope that you read this and decide to give your money to anyone other than Sony.

Thanks for listening :)

small and thin, integrated power supply (xbox 360 has an external unit that weighs as much as the console), free internet connectivity, and although it has the EXACT same graphics as the xbox, the price point is competitive but the xbox is marginally more fun.

Overall a very nice product. Menu and other settings are kind of clunky and take some work to find but doesn’t diminish the product in any way.

My first Playstation
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
There are so many reviews out here that elucidate all the cool details (and some not so cool) that I won’t even bother repeating some of them. I’ve never owned a previous Playstation so I have no position on the lack of backward compatibility. What do I like about the unit? Love the blu-ray player. I own a Sharp BD-20U (a first gen player) and this PS3 was a nice step up. Not that the Sharp was bad…..it’s only with recent titles that I’m finding the load times to be truly excessive and annoying. I like that I can stream ESPN360 from my PC to the big living room TV…a definite plus. My girls are starting to play PS3 games at their mom’s house so it’s great they can do it at mine too. I’m a newby when it comes to these PS3 games….most of you would laugh at my amateur abilities with the controller….I laugh at myself. I’ve got some learning to do! I bought Fallout 3 and COD Modern Warfare 2 and am really enjoying them. Pretty impressive graphics and the box plays it all very smoothly. I yanked out the 120Gb hd and replaced it with a 500Gb drive….the install was probably one of the quickest hardware replacements I’ve ever done—and I do mean ever. It certainly was the quickest hard drive change ever accomplished. The PS3 had no problem reading the system update from the USB stick. I don’t like that I had to go buy an additional controller, but that hasn’t soured me on the overall purchase. I enjoy watching my kids play this “sing along” game I bought (two mikes…..funny stuff) and the additional cam I bought kicks the enjoyment factor up a notch. Have I spent a lot? Yep, when you consider the extra media reader, USB hub, camera, extra controller, larger hard drive, and PS3 controller for my Harmony remote all add up big in the “extra cost” column. Oh well….goes with the territory I guess. I like the unit a lot and won’t discourage anybody from buying…..it’s fun!!

Great product. was skeptical at first reading all the reviews about overheating and not running blu-ray movies but I took a chance and do not regret purchasing this product so far. I have only had it for 2 months now but have not had any problems playing movies and downloading a few demo games from playstation.

I was unaware you could access netflix but I was pleasantly suprise when accessing the playstation network. I have not tried renting anything though.

I do have an older 40GB PS3 I use for the livingroom and have not had any problems with that unit either. 5 Stars!

Excellent entertainment system!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love our PS3. I used our computer for gaming before but decided to give one of these a try as it is very expensive to put a good gaming system together only for them to up gaming requirements. This system is amazing. The games are awesome but I tell you we use it as much for movies as we do games. We loved the blu ray player and watching the movies in pristine HD and that was great but then we discovered Netflix Watch Instantly and realized how much we’ve been missing. There is so much to watch on there its incredible. My personal favorite is the Rockford Files series I used to watch as a kid. You wont get this with XBox…unless you pay for their gold membership.

This isnt a very indepth review but I wanted to point out how much there is to do on this system. Its much more than games! Get one and enjoy!

I just got the ps3 from FedEx today with Little Big Planet (game). Then I unbox it , wow I can tell that it’s definitely lighter than the original ps3 , plus it’s smaller too. The graphic is just amazing , sound quality isn’t bad either. It’s more quieter than my original ps3 and Blue ray playback is quiet as well .I Like this console very much!

I love games. I have had every console in the 80′s and early 90′s. Then I got into the computer games big time. I never messed with the Xbox or playstation because I’m old and I’m use to the computer controls. This week my daughter brought over a playstation 3 and I was blown away. The blue ray is great as everyone knows.(This should be bought just for that.) I have a man’s room – 61″ LED DLP TV, Energy speakers, Onkyo reciever 7.1, and HD & Blue-ray players. Now with the playstation 3 hooked up I’m hooked. (My lovely wife has ordered me the Playstaion 3 250gig for Xmas.) I am getting use to the controls which is very different. I am playing call of duty and struggling but slowly getting the hang of it. (What’s a good learning game?)

Last night I put in the Netflix Disk and in a few minutes I was watching a Netflix movie on my TV. The picture wasn’t blue-ray but it was good enough. The sound was good and my wireless network handled it very well. I was expecting poor quality movie viewing and slow load up. I was wrong. This machine seems to do everything. On my next day off I’m going to explore what else it can do.

PS3 DOES WHAT IT’S DESIGNED TO DO
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m enjoying my PS3 everyday. Great graphics and ease of use. In my opinion using the USB cable to charge the controller, sucks. I purchased a charger for my controllers and now the system is complete. I have a review for the charger I purchased, as well. I’m glad I have the slim design. It has a matte finish instead of the gloss that the fatboy comes with. The gloss attracts so much dust and finger prints, while the matte does not. The hard drive is big enough for me, because I’m just a casual gamer. I have yet to try out the blue ray functions. If your in the market for a game console try the PS3.

Worth the wait!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just picked this up on black friday bundled with 2 games and a Blu-Ray movie. I was able to set it up with ease with only a hiccup with the blue tooth headset which was quickly resolved. All I can say is that it was worth the wait! The HD graphics are fantastic, the games run smoothly and the interface is easy to navigate. The only improvement I would like to see is with the voice chat system. I’d love to be able to start a chat with friends that persists whether we are in a game or not. Perhaps this is possible but I haven’t figured it out yet. Overall, I am a very happy gamer.

Absolutely stunning
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this about 2 weeks ago for the full price [...]. I would have waited for the BF sale but my Samsung 52″ arrived sooner. SO I had to make sure PS3 was there to compliment it.

I am a tech support engineer and I know when a product is designed with technically challenged consumer on mind. This is a good example of plug and play product. I purchased Logitec Keyboard, the remote (a must I say) for the PS3. How pleased I am to see that the PS3 detects these equipment with no issue.

To top it all, it recognized my wireless signal and configured itself. Man, this is a amazing product. Bravo to SEC!

A very good system epecially if you have small children around
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The PS3 is a very good system and it’s online and wifi is great. The games are all fun and the blu-ray display is nothing special if you’ve had an upconverting 1080p DVD player but the sound it a MILLION times better that anything in DVD-format. The games are varied enough so that when my little cousins are over I can still play fun games that won’t give them nightmares. Plus, the games are in Blu-ray-rom format which means they are made like blu-ray movies in that the disks are virtually unscratchable. I had a PS2 prior to my PS3 and i hava 360 and I lost a few games to scratches from both consoles because of my little brother mistreating the games. But the PS3 games don’t scratch unless you take an engraver to them. This is a really nice perk because then you don’t need to keep looking for replacement games. This is a really nice perk that isn’t really talked about alot.

PS3 vs XBox 360 vs Pong
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I reviewed the systems in alphabetical order, so as not to skew the results in favor of any particular system.

Pong

SETUP:

Pong was amazingly easy to set up. I connected the system to an extension cord – I had to unplug the toaster, but otherwise… no problems there. The machine came with a fancy switch – allowing me to switch back and forth between normal antenna reception and gaming, appropriately labeled TV and GAME. Yes it was a tad bit confusing at first, but after a few days, it seemed like second nature. Wow. After reconfiguring the antenna and attaching the new connector to the back of the TV with a Philips head screwdriver, I was ready to rock and roll.

CONTROLS:

Pong features two “paddle” joysticks. You can rotate the paddles left or right, depending on whether you wish to move the “virtual” tennis racket up or down. I’d like to see some improvements here – the left and right equals up and down were VERY confusing at first. But after a while, much like the odd TV/GAME switch, it became second nature.

DISPLAY:

Crystal clear. Living in a rural area, most of my programming, like the Price is Right, comes in with a lot of static. But this game features the most amazing graphics I’ve ever seen. The bars are much more crisp than any you’ll ever see during ANY emergency warning. Absolutely amazing.

GAME PLAY:

Wow. This game is amazing. I don’t know how I ever lived without Pong. I’ve read a lot of reviews here that go on and on about the “story line”. Read a BOOK, loser! Or here’s your *#$*# story:

Mr. and Mrs. Pong went out to play a game of tennis. They ROCK! End of story. Now play the game, jerkwad! Idiots.

Anyway, my friends and I really enjoyed the game. It was fun for the whole family. Except Uncle Ted. I totally wasted him! HAHA! FAIL!!!!!! Uncle Ted SUCKS! HAHA!

like it. My friends like it. While I don’t want to prejudge the other systems in the lineup – Pong is looking hard to beat.

SCORE:

Five stars. If you own any of these 3 systems, Pong should definitely be one of them. And at $199, it’s a steal.

PS3

Won’t hook up to my television. Costs a lot. PS3 sucks. You suck if you play PS3. I hate you. FAIL!!!!!

XBox 360

Won’t hook up to my television. Costs the same as the PS3. XBox 360 sucks. You suck if you play XBox 360. I hate you. FAIL!!!!!

Results:

Pong WINS! Pong RULES!!!!! You Suck! I hate you!

UPDATE: For all of the haters, I’ve yet to find proper connectors for my 13″ B&W television set. When you find one, let me know – until then, SUCK IT!!!!!!! LOSERS!!!!!! FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!
