A good stealth game with an interesting historical story setting.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Velvet Assassin takes place in WWII and you will play as a Violet a Female assassin working for the British. You will perform several stealth missions and most are fun and rewarding. You’re given multiple ways to get through an area. You’ll kill most enemies silently with your knife. The Game does provide several areas where other more entertaining options are available to dispose of your foes. A fine example is pulling the pins on an unsuspecting soldier’s grenade. You can also use morphine as a super instant kill in certain areas. It gives the player a way out of sticky areas. The game plays well and most of the checkpoints won’t have you going to far if you mess things up. The AI isn’t very bright in this game. When considering the small confines most of the missions are played in it serves its purpose. The game provides a nice history and story of WWII and if you listen to the text German conversations you get a small glimpse of how terrible the war was.
Now for the bad part, the gunplay is just plain terrible and severely hampers a few areas. Particularly the last levels in the game where they decided to remove most of the darkness and the morphine power. The game also has a glitch in which cut scenes won’t play and you’ll be unable to proceed without a complete reload. I did find that if you go into your dashboard and select the option to load the game to your hard drive and select the play from the hard drive will remedy this problem.
Velvet Assassin is a good stealth game with a nice historical perspective. If you enjoy stealth games like Splinter Cell or the Hit man series you’ll find this an enjoyable title.
Good
Fun stealth action
Nice historical story setting
Bad
Terrible gunplay ruins some sections and hampers the games final levels
Some spots require many tries to master.
Glitches with cut scenes not playing
Zzzzzzzzzz

Wow, this is bad. If you suffer from some sort of sleep disorder then this is the game for you. There are no exciting moments in the game, the graphics look like they are from the PS1 era and if you die during a mission you get to watch all the cutscenes again. Do not even waste a rental on this game.

This game has its moments, and isn’t as awful as you might hear, thus the three stars. It brings back memories of Thief – the Dark Project, which was a great game. It also brings back memories of Manhunt, which was another great game. So far, so good, right? The thing you wish you could do in Thief is stealth executions – the blackjack was fun and all, but left me wanting more. Adding the satisfaction of Manhunt-style brutality to Thief would be the best of both worlds, right? Even better to add some bullet-time stylings like Max Payne, right?
Sadly, no. I had really high hopes for this game. But somehow it just doesn’t come together that way in Velvet Assassin. There’s not much of a storyline (what could be more cliched than a video game where you kill Nazis?). The graphics are passable, but you’ll get no “wow” visual moments. Sound isn’t particulary innovative, either. There’s an awkward transition every time you move to a different area of the map – crawling, climbing ladders, etc. The gameplay is fairly linear and the game isn’t all that long. There’s only a handful of weapons, so the stealth executions get repetitive…there was a lot more variety in Manhunt, in both weapons and cinematic stealth moments. Also, the difficulty just doesn’t seem right if you stick with it to the last level, so expect some frustration – especially with the checkpoint structure in place. These things keep Velvet Assassin from being the great game it should have been. It was enjoyable, but could have been so much more.
Stealth action games have to really bring something to the table, because there’s no real replayability as there is in games with multiplayer elements. That’s why there’s so few true stealth action games being made. So, it’s understandable if you need a fix of stealth…just set your expectations accordingly.
Totally Frustrating

I dont care what everybody else says, this game is too inconsistant, and no i dont have ADD. Ive been spotted through walls and then shot down through the same wall. Ive had them not see me when I was right next to them. Ive had them hear me when i was supposed to be in silent mode. Ive had soldiers walk over dead bodies and not notice them at all. This game doesnt feel like your on a learning curve ,but a trial and error night mare trip from H- E -double hocky sticks. If you are discovered you might as well restart the last checkpoint imediately because the melee system is non exsistent. At least give me enough bullets to get me out of a jam ,and why cant i pick up the enemy weapons? I just got too sick of playing levels over and over and over again. It just got old and i got tired of cursing and wanting to snap my controller in half. I tried and tried and wanted to like this game, but the faults weighed to heavy on me and i had to put it down. Good idea though . It just needed some more time in development. thank goodness Broken Steel was just released.I guess ill put another 100 hours on fallout 3 since there is nothing else worth playing right now . Thanks
Not Worth It

Upfront – I’m a mature gamer. I enjoy Call of Duty, Resident Evil, NCAA Football, KillZone. I own both the XBOX 360 and PS3. I bought Velvet Assassin with high hopes. From the moment I put it in, I didn’t like it. The graphics compared to more recent games was terrible. I didn’t think there was very much detail. If you are looking for a game that has fast action – this isn’t it! You have to sneak around a lot (what the game is based on in my opinion) and I also think its sends the wrong message to younger players using the morphene as a added incentive. It may get better the more you play it, but I got rid of it after two hours of trying to make myself like it. My opinion so take it or leave it.
Patience
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I wouldn’t pay full price for this game but if it had been in development for longer and had a few issues fixed it wouldn’t be as unknown as it is. This game requires patience to fully enjoy. The game can be frustrating for people that want quick run-throughs in what they play but if you’re able to play slow and think about what you need to do then it can be an enjoyable experience for sure.
have you guys even played this game?

i have to disagree with what others are saying about this game, it has beautiful graphics, awsome excutions, a great score, and overall one of the funist stelth games iv played since manhunt, im not saying it doesnt have flaws, but this game offers so much more.
Velvet Assassin Xbox 360
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was really excited when I first heard about this game. I had such high expectations for it considering I love WWII games and with a female killer–how much more could I ask for? Well I waited for almost 4 months for this game. I rushed to GameStop to purchase it and I brought it home and I must say I am a bit disappointed. I am on the third chapter–something about killing a nazi butcher. When you get killed, you have to sit through everything all over again–it becomes rather boring and monotonous. Hopefully if and when I ever get past chapter 3 I will start to appreciate this game a bit more. Good Luck! This game is not for just anyone–it takes a lot of patience which sometimes I lack.
Velvet Assassin: A Great Game for Stealth Gamers
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I really loved this game. I didn’t think it would be great before I bought it because I hadn’t seen it reviewed; thus I thought it was a minor production, but it turned out to be great (okay, maybe not at the level of Half-Life: Orange Box, Mass Effect or Dead Space, but games like those don’t come around very often. I was never a big fan of stealth games (though I did get into the Hit Man series) until I recently played Assassin’s Creed but especially Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, which I think are just awesome. One aspect of Velvet Assassin that I especially like is the water-color like graphics, similar to those of Far Cry 2, another great game. They give a game a very appealing aesthetic visual experience. I also liked the realistic quality of the environments and characters (all right, the assassin is too wispy to be be an accomplished assassin, but she more enjoyable to look at than Riddick, and sometimes it’s nice that girls get a little payback). In addition, the game has a good story line.
Without going into a lot of detail about some of the games cool (but simple and straightforward features), I will just say that the game is easy unless it is played purely by stealth. In other words if you just shoot the enemy at a distance the game isn’t a challenge. I assume master gamers will complete missions without killing anyone except the assigned targets. But my strategy is to kill by stealth every enemy because that requires sneaking up to every enemy to kill him, whereas the other method requires just sneaking passed the enemy.
Thus I strive for 100% kills by stealth. Usually I accomplish 90% stealth kills. For example, for the Death of the Butcher sequence I killed all 29 enemies, 26 by stealth (including not using morphine bullet-time kills; I use morphine only to get my character in a better position for a stealth kill). In some cases, stealth can’t be used because the enemy is out of reach, such as snipers. As a result, the stealth player rarely uses a gun except to attract attention to set up an enemy. (Silent kills are accomplished not by shooting the enemy but by getting close enough to push the action button enabling the AI to decide how the enemy will be dispatched.) Played in this way increases the game play by at least a 100%, thus making an expensive game a better buy.
So if you are a first-person shooter fan who enjoys using stealth, I don’t think you will be disappointed with Velvet Assassin.
good stealth game
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
the story and character are really cool, the atmosphere i really enjoy , i love worldwar 2 games. moh,cod u name it. but this is a 3person stealth game for something different its cool. i love shooters but like i said other then all out shooting its pretty good. gamplay reminds me of manhunt which was awesome. morphine mode is really cool for a instant kill. the knife by itself other then a instant kill kinda sucks. the shooting could of been a bit better too. other then that cool game cheap price. so if ur lookin for a cheapgame to play while there isnt much out then give this try. im playin this to hold me over til alanwake and red dead redemption come out .
A beautiful, fun, game, containing minor flaws.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Velvet Assassin has fun stealth sequences, detailed environments, fresh stealth ideas. It does contain flaws, as many games do, all of which are minor, the controls are good, contrary to what I have seen other reviewers say, I rented it first because I was unsure sbout it, from what I have seen of it review wise, I was expecting, crap. But it is nothing of the sort. It is an interesting, fun stealth game.
What’s with all the bad reviews?
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I don’t see why people are giving Velvet Assassin such bad reviews. Yeah, it’s not an ‘action’ stealth game like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, but it holds it’s own as being a WWII game that DOESN’T involve being in the frontlines.
I’ve been needing a stealth game for my 360 and Velvet Assassin fits the case perfectly. It’s a surprisingly simple stealth game-for some this is good and others this is bad. If you’re looking for a stealth game where you get to use gadgets and gizmos as well as climb up walls, use grappling guns ect…turn away now, for Velvet Assassin has none of this. Nope. In this game all you have are your wits to get you through.
You start out discovering that Violet is in a coma in a hospital. Where she is exactly, you don’t know-but it’s explained as you play along. You then enter memories of the first mission-which is basiclly a tutorial level.
Stealth is extremely simple. Stay in the shadows(and silent), and you’re safe. Sneak behind an enemy and pull off as many silent kills as you can. Not only do these look sweet, but you can keep a low profile while doing so.
Firearms are based off real WWII weapons, and ammo for each one is EXTREMLEY limited, so you don’t want to waste any shots unless you have to. I’ve read some reviews from people saying that they don’t use the weapons…I seriously have NO clue how that’s possible-I find myself needing to use them time and time again for silent headshot kills as well for blasting my way through enemies when the time is right.
You upgrade Violet by finding collectables in each mission. In some missions there are hidden objectives and precious collectables that will chalk you up with a TON of experiance points, so it’s good to explore as much of the area as you can. Yes, gameplay is extremely linar-but that didn’t bother me at all. I actually liked it due to the fact that whenever I play Splinter Cell I ALWAYS get lost and frustrated. Velvet Assassin dims down the ‘frustrating lost’ vibe by being linar.
Graphics are-I’ll admit-not the greatest out there, but I’m not really one who nickpicks that sort of thing. I play on a standard 24 inch 480pi TV-and the game looks fine to me. Someone commented on the frame rate being bad, but I didn’t notice anything. I guess if you’re really picky about those sorts of things then you’d notice them.
The Morphine Mode in Velvet Assassin is pretty cool. Violet has the ability to use Morphine to stop time in all missions (except for missions 11 and 12) thus enabling her to pull off kills from the front or get the heck out of there. The screen glows white and Violet is in her nightgown (I’m not sure why…fits the mood, maybe?) with red blood cells floating everywhere. Weird…but cool at the same time.
The enviorments in Velvet Assassin are a mixture between boring and downright scary. The first mission is pretty boring. Once you hit the ‘Third Man’ mission things get sorta creepy. His mission 10 and you’ll find yourself in a creepy little town where Nazis have killed and strung about innocent people. Mission 12 hands down has the scariest envoirment in the entire game.
This really isn’t a problem as it is a surprise. I was rather shocked to see that Velvet Assassin actually has dead children in gameplay. It’s nothing gory or anything by all means-but this is the first game I’ve played that actually has children in a village…ya know, where children should be? Every other game that I’ve played that takes place in a location that SHOULD have children-doesn’t. This really did come as a surprise to me though. It’s not bad, it’s just unsual.
Personally I found Velvet Assassin to be quite fun. I was always eager to see where Violet would go next-and if she would ever wake up. (Oh, and her voice actor is really good) I enjoy the simple stealth system and found it fun to whistle-get someone’s attention, and then stealth kill him for his stupidity. But I’m just the kind of person who has a knack for patience-and I don’t need a flashy storyline to entertain me. Like I said, if you’re looking for an ‘action-packed’ stealth game then I suggest you stay clear of Velvet Assassin, cuz this isn’t the game for you.
First Impression…not so good
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
When I first heard about this game, I felt it had the potential to be a great game. To have the stealth elements of MGS and Splinter Cell within a setting that never gets old to me, WWII, sounded like a sure winner. Although I have only played it for two days, I have found several problems with this game and finding myself slowly moving to something else on my shelf. First thing I noticed was the graphics, at 1080p the majority of the environment looked very stunning but objects and people do look choppy. I would have to say that overall, it doesn’t meet the standards of a 09 game. The really big problem I have is the frame-rate. It is extremely noticeable at start since you are placed in a wooded area. This is a big problem since it makes camera movement awkward and you heavy depend on constantly shifting angles to maintain eyes on your prey. The last thing that comes to mind is the scenarios. Again, I have only experienced up to the 2nd level but scenarios seem very linear and scripted. I was hoping for a larger playground, having several locations to stalk and hide, moving within the enemy as a picked off the enemy one-by-one. I have not used much of arsenal this game has to offer, so I don’t know how the sniping or shootout factors play out. As far as positives I can think of three, with first being stealth kills. Knife stealth kills are very detailed and are not limited to one basic animation. The second is basic ability to improve skills. If you collect enough items in the environment you can upgrade your morphine mode (freezes time for easy kills or fast escape), stealth movement speed or stamina (how well you take damage). The last one is that they didn’t completely drop the ball on stealth game play. It still requires you to quickly move from cover to cover, use timing and patience to dispatch grouped foes and getting close and personal with enemies since ammo is rare. I feel I’m not giving this title enough credit since I have barely played it but this is for you folks who are desperately looking for a new title….please look somewhere else.
Very fun game

I personally think this game is really fun. I bet all of the bad ratings come from halo fans. But i can say i gave halo two thumbs down. this game has all the elements to get you thinking how you are going to complete the missions.
More Like Broken Assassin.

In 2009 I had high hopes for 2 female lead gaming titles in Velvet Assassin and WET. This being the first of the two I have to say, I didn’t start on a high note. Velvet Assassin takes place during World War II as you play British secret agent Voilette Szabo. Now this was supposed to be 3rd-Person stealth action title, but at the end of the game it should be classified as just a 3rd-Person game. Let me just say I wish I read some reviews about it first but at least I didn’t throw away $60. Now before I give my review ratings, which will seem like an assault, I will point out on Metacritic and Gamerankings Velvet Assassin has an average game score of 56/100. I’ll give my ratings based on Presentation, Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, and Replayability.
Presentation 1/10: Velvet Assassin’s story is flat out abysmal. The whole flashback method isn’t necessary and everything isn’t really explained by the end of the game. We aren’t introduced to Violette’s character or anything about her. No other important or memorable characters.
Graphics 3/10: The gritty look of WWII is just about the only praise this game gets from me and I mean the ENTIRE game. Every Nazi member just seem identical, the cutscenes are choppy and there are numerous technical issues. Definitely below-average but I have seen worse.
Sound 2/10: The suspense of the music rising during conflict is meh, and every other sound is either whistles or a German song.
Gameplay 1/10: The stealth mechanics are horrid. The shadows don’t always keep you hidden, there have been a handful of times I’ve completely darkened a room to only be rewarded by a swarm of enemy fire. Violette is also very slow in movement, yes you can boost her stats but it still fails in comparison with the enemy A.I. Next problem is the stealth action is very linear. There are no multiple paths to take to progress through levels, or areas to infiltrate just one direct way to go. The enemy A.I is very robotic. They whistle, sing, walk the same path back and forth, and kill you in a fraction of a second if you are caught. The Morphine is a decent touch were you slow down time to kill enemies but she doesn’t carry any weapons in the beginning of levels. So now when we finally receive a weapon, ammunition is so limited you just got to think why even bother. To wrap it up there’s also another bad addition of a disguise stealth element and it falters for two reasons. One, the boots she puts on are extremely noisy and two, when you get close to enemies they still detect you. So yes the gameplay is quite awful.
Replayability 1/10: There is none. The campaign will run you about 6-8 hours and there isn’t anything after the campaign. I beat it once and it was right back in its Gamefly envelope.
My Overall Experience: Horrible. Is it worth $60? Absolutely not. Would I recommend this to anyone? Not at all.
Awesome stealth for the patient gamer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
In the spirit of spinter cell.
Overall, Velvet Assassain is a great old school stealth game.
Great, vivid, eerie environments combined with a constant sense of hostility makes a beautiful gaming experience fit for only those with long attention spans.
If you enjoyed the original Splinter Cell or any of the Hitman games, this one will not dissapoint.
Just have an open mind.
Poor Controls and sloppy stealth elements killed this game
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am not going to waste a lot of words on this review but to say that i agree with what everyone else has said about this game.
The controls were poorly placed and implemented, the AI is really bad, mapping even moreso and the way the game saves to the point that you have to go back and pick up items really made this a frustrating title.
This was one of the worst XBox 360 titles I have played in a very long time.
Don’t waste your money on this.
