Red Dead Redemption is a Western epic, set at the turn of the 20th century when the lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age. The story of former outlaw, John Marston, Red Dead Redemption takes players on a great adventure across the American frontier. more info

Great game
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a fantastic game. The dialogue and story are very good, the combat is fantastic, and the graphics are some of the best you will have seen. Aside from the single player, there is a lot you can do in the multiplayer mode.

However, if you do not plan to use the multiplayer portion of this game, I would honestly say that this game is probably a rental. Rent it, enjoy the great single player, and bring it back.

5 star graphics with 3 star game play
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I will spare you the details since so much has already been written here and elsewhere about this game.

The game is a western that plays out like a spagetti western. The graphics and open-world design of the game are nothing short of breathtaking. GTA IV was also an open world sandbox, but it was a thin veneer if you pushed beyond the window dressing. This game succeeds at creating a living, breathing world, from the towns to the desert. The voice acting is also top-notch and rivals any Hollywood production.

But, in the end, this is primarily a shooting game and ironically, that is where it suffers the most. Like the GTA games before it, the shooting is cheesy, simplistic, and arcade-like. Countless enemies spawn like roaches from seemingly nowhere and just keep coming. There must be some million-man cowboy army in ready reserve just over the horizon. By left clicking on each enemy, the sight autolocks. You left-click, autolock, right trigger fire, and release, then rinse, wash, and repeat for each enemy. It is possible to nearly not aim at all using this method.

This bothered me, so I switched to the expert mode for aiming so it didn’t automatically lock-on like I am a clairvoyant ninja assassin with heightened super-human reflexes, but I still found the combat over the top and arcadey.

It’s too bad, because between the open world, great graphics, and fairly adult story it could have been a truly great game. I think it’s odd that Rockstar spent all that effort elsewhere only to dumb down the combat to virtual whack-a-mole. An ever spawning, million man army of moles that is. Why go to the effort of creating a near-perfect immersive world to only then offer combat as simplistic as a stand-up arcade shooting game at Chuck-E-Cheese?

Oh well, you can’t argue with success and this game is breaking records and is highly critically acclaimed, so obviously I am in the minority. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the game overall but I think it is mainly because of the story and acting. But everytime I get into yet another, thousand cowboys versus me shoot-out, I just kinda sigh and plug along. This is a good game, but with some improved pacing and combat design, it could have been truly great game.

Great for about a week
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The game was great when I first got it. There was so much to do with the missions, mini games, and online play. My favorite thing to do online was get my wanted level up and see how long it’d take them to stop me. But sadly all of this got very repeatitive after about a week. I sold this game to gamestop for about 25 dollars. Rent this game dont buy it.

Haven’t gotten to play the single player as much as i’d like to, but the multi-player is fun for a couple weeks. the combination of the single player and multi-player modes of the game will probably tide me over until halo: reach comes out.

Not bad not great!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The graphics are great, the realism, the horses, the towns, everything is visually stunning. The potential is very good! But the game itself for me got old quickly. In free mode, if you decide to do some dirty deeds, your going to get killed very quickly. When you go around picking a fight, you cant kill the person your fist fighting with, it just goes on and on he will keep getting back up even if you beat him for an hour. The people in the game freak out if you cause some commotion, everyone starts screaming and running within a mile. It’s very cartoonish! And the missions themselves I dont like the characters or the cartoonish was they act or respond. It’s like a joke! Matter of fact the whole storyline plays out like a bad Western! Not like a gritty Western starring Clint Eastwood or something like that! Myself I’m a BIG GTA fan, I’ve loved them all since GTA III and I am surprised they haven’t messed one up. But for me this isnt the same! I also love Mafia for the PC and look forward to Mafia 2. I love open ended games. But this Western game although it has beautiful graphics and physics, I just couldn’t keep playing it. I paid $54 for it and turned around and sold it for $45 on Ebay. But who knows, when the game goes down to $15-$20 I may pick it up again for a novelty. But honestly, I took my $50 and put it to better use, I bought Modern Warfare 2 and I love it! This is a game they could improve on next time though and make it more serious and gritty. This version is a little too comedic and romantic!

This game is amazing
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This game lives up to the hype! I wasn’t sold at first, but at the last minute I bit on the pre-order (which I never do) and hoped for the best. I was beyond impressed with the depth of the game and the addictive nature of the side quests/challenges. The story is great, and the characters are believable. If you like open world games, this is a must play.

Red Dead Redemption is not a fun game; however Rockstar’s art department did a great job. If you’re looking to pick up a simulator that plays like a 9 to 5 job, then this is the title for you. Just imagine traveling for 5 minutes to get to your quest, and then imagine once you’ve arrived being told to come back in 20 minutes. This game was so annoyingly boring I found that I spent most of my time playing the poker mini-game.

If you’ve played GTA IV and thought it was “THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!!” then you’ll probably love this game too.

If you’ve played GTA IV and thought it was “meh” then you’ll probably meh this game too.

A Western With Lots of Bugs
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
If you remember the original GTA you would drown if you fell in water well this will remind you of that stupidity. If you like the idea of enemies respawning while you’re trying to loot and your horse getting stuck in the terrain instead of coming for you – then this is the game for you. If you like to support Rockstars crap programming and endless stupid quests then this is the game for you. Otherwise, take a pass.

Good game. Fun to Play but repetitive play gets boring FAST
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Lots of good play value but over time, some tasks get boring & repetitive! AI is too easy and rtealistic physics is lacking but if you like Western style gaming, this is THE one to get!

Fun game with lots to do.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The game has tons to do and Rockstar definitely added a lot of depth and detail. The scenery if beautiful. Some tasks become a little tiresome, but if you’ve played other GTA type games, you probably know what I mean. The story if a nice change from other GTA type games. If you love GTA, you’ll probably love this game.

Flawed by Design – Freezes on older XBox 360 Systems
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The game starts out like a Clint Eastwood movie and from the looks of what I could see it would be a great game. However, as one of the folks with an older XBox 360 it appears to purposefully be designed to fail on my system. That’s my reward for buying a 360 game system early, games that are designed to fail on my system. I got through one save of the game in the early part of the game and then after that – it was random freezing. Specifically, after the tour of the Ranch where my character was taken after being shot, every single time I’ve tried to play it – it froze. Not in the same place but it has always frozen. My XBox 360 plays every game in my collection flawlessly. There are no problems. This game however, freezes and cannot be played on my system. The forums are full of similar complaints, I have not heard of any remedy being offered for this problem, perhaps they think we’ll just shut up and go away. The game says that it for the Xbox 360, I have an XBox 360 yet it does not work. I cannot imagine that they did not test this on all models of the XBox 360 and so I can only assume that it’s purposeful. The purpose? To get me to purchase yet another 360 I assume. This is not cool and probably not legal either. If you buy this game, save your receipt – you will be returning it.

Surpassing even the excellent GTV IV
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Please allow me to cut to the chase: Red Dead Redemption is everything I wished a GTA game could be. And I liked the GTA games. So I REALLY liked Red Dead Redemption.

By now the basic premise is something we all know. RDR is essentially a GTA IV style game draped in the cloth of a Clint Eastwood western. Instead of an urban environment you’ve got the wide open expanse of the American west circa 1911. Instead of city gangsters you have bandits and outlaws. Instead of cars you have horses. Instead of endless city streets you have huge expanses of wilderness.

These are all reasons why I love the game, incidentally. Because I love what the GTA games do, but I’ve never been all that enamored with the setting. This? This is right up my alley.

The basic gameplay is very similar to any GTA game, GTA IV especially. You’ve got a big, three-part map you unlock as the story moves ahead. Story-based missions appear on the map, during which you watch a cutscenes, gallop off to a location, and shoot a load of people. These usually have good variety and mix things up frequently. Between missions you’re free to wander the world, engage in mayhem, do side missions, explore, and so on.

The setting is a major point of departure from the GTA formula, however. No dense city streets teaming with people and cars to run over and crash into. Instead you get a huge swath of American and Mexican wilderness peppered with towns, outposts and landmarks. Everything from the Great Plains to the Sierra Nevadas to Monument Valley to vast desert landscapes. You’ll see herds of buffalo, packs of wolves, wild horses, and loads more. You can hunt game, catch horses, and so on. It’s a big place made even bigger by the fact that there are no sports cars to hop into. Though you can fast travel using carriages, trains and a campsite quick travel option, most of the time you’ll be motoring along on a horse.

While you’re doing this, STUFF happens. There are all sorts of crazy people out there, many of them doing crazy things or having crazy things done to them, and you can intervene at will. Lawmen might be chasing down an escaped criminal, a husband might as you to help his kidnapped wife, someone might try to steal your horse, and dozens more. Get involved and you can see your fame increase. These events are random, and they breath life into the world.

The meat and potatoes of the game is in the main story, and it’s a good one. Reformed outlaw John Marston is being forced by the government to track down his old gang mates. A series of rich characters help you find them, but only after you get involved in their stories and help them out. You’ll help a lawman and a swindler, get involved in a Mexican revolution, work with some insane loons, and eventually fight it out in the dying days of the old west. It’s a Rockstar game through and through.

As with most Rockstar games, the voice acting is impeccable and the cutscenes are well written. There are a LOT of them, and they can be long, but the story is never less than entertaining. And the ending is as bold as it is inevitable – the story COULDN’T have ended any other way, and I love them for doing it.

When not doing the story, there are plenty of side missions to do. In addition to a series of 40 challenges involving hunting, sharpshooting and other skills, there are a number of “strangers” missions, brief mini-stories prompted when you encounter certain people while out and about in the world. Some are brief and pointless, others interesting, but all add to the richness of the world.

This being a Rockstar game, a few of the usual niggles still apply. The save function still requires you to stop in at safehouses to save (though you can now save on the road using a campsite), shooting isn’t always easy or accurate (you’ll be using the slow motion Dead Eye system a LOT), and the instructions and tutorial stink. If you haven’t played a GTA game, there will be a learning curve involved.

But it’s hard to dwell on these flaws when the game itself is so darn good, in my opinion easily surpassing the acclaimed grand Theft Auto IV. It’s Rockstar gameplay through and through, with a great story, a fantastic setting, and loads to do. Highly recommended.

Awesome game, one of the best
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a pretty novice and laid back gamer, RDR is phenomenal. The game overall is top rate. Instead of rehashing the great features, I’ll focus on the negatives:

1. Suffers from what I call “GTA-ism”…fun to kill, loot, rob and just cause overall anarchy; but the novelty wears off fast. It would be nice to have intelligent law enforcement for once…something to make you think and plan besides just shooting an official every 10 seconds while you hide behind a railing.

2. Automatic save function should have a “roll back” feature. I went rogue on my “honorable” game and foolishly shot a bird to complete one of my quests which automatically saved the game. (Yes, I should have manually saved the game first, lesson learned)

3. Enemies are somewhat stupid. They are easy to kill. Haven’t encountered a mission that was hard to complete.

4. Not a fan of the “on/off” mission status in respect to AI interaction (applies to all GTA games). For example, I returned a hogtied robber to a store owner and once the mission completes, she just kicks him for hours. It seems like I should be able to interact with her post-mission the same way I did during the mission or at the very least, be optioned to “honorably” beat the robber along with the store owner.

5. Random world events should be longer and harder to complete. Most are easy.

6. Not sure why there is only one train, seems like having additional trains would be better.

7. “Stranger” missions are just that, strange. Most are funny, but confusing.

8. Money is pretty easy to come by, seems like it should be more of a factor.

9. Dueling feature is easy, should be harder. Guaranteed kill.

Grand Theft Horsie
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The comparisons were unavoidable. Rockstar changed gaming forever with GTA III and the sandbox game structure that has made the series so popular. The same formula has been applied to Red Dead Redemption and, though somewhat linear at times, the game works wonderfully. The western genre hasn’t been popular in the gaming world, and with good reason. Developers had a hard time finding a good gameplay formula that would keep players interested. Enter Grand Theft Auto. The expansive open world just begs to be explored and explore it you can. From hunting animals for their meat and skins to wiping out outlaw gangs, the world is full of things to do. Want a better horse? Go break a wild stallion. Need some extra pocket money? Go hunting. Just want to shoot people? Feel free, just make sure to get that wanted level back down and pay your bounty. If you’ve played GTA, you’ll understand why. Want to spend a little time with the lovely ladies of the night? Forget it. You play as a married man and are loyal to the end. And that is O.K. A person can spend days avoiding the main story, but eventually you’ll have to play through it. This can lead to some funny moments if you’re the type of player that likes to be on the immoral side of things. Running through the world killing innocents and running from the law only to suddenly enter a story quest and be the hero that rides alongside the law is somewhat laughable, but really doesn’t deprive the player of any enjoyment. Red Dead Redemption is a can’t miss experience for anyone that likes a good story, hour upon hour of gameplay and small unexpected twists in the plot. A fun game from a first class developer.

The multiplayer is spectacular, the single player is engrossing, and the replayability is awesome. Buy this NOW!

Best Sandbox game yet
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This game is the best sandbox game to date. I enjoyed GTA IV, but got sick of sooo much offensive language all the time. Yes, there still are profanities, but it is on occasion instead of all the time. Most characters are polite and use proper grammar. I also enjoy riding my horse across the terrain. I heard that people enjoyed this from other reviews, but I thought… come on, riding a horse across terrain is fun. The horse riding is absolutely spot on, the atmosphere is perfect. People say that Red Dead is just GTA IV on horses, but in my opinion this is not the case. Yes, they are both sandboxes and have similarities such as the controls are the same and you have missions or quests to complete, but the whole feel of the game is completely different. The feel of the game of being in the wild west during the early 1900′s is completely different than NYC modern day. Just a note, the single player is shorter than on GTA IV, but that is not an issue for me. Great, great game. Loads of fun! A must have in my opinion!

A bygone era
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
RDR is not perfect, but it’s probably as close to perfect as I’ve ever seen. There are occasional visual glitches, and I think the game was actually just a little too long. I was chomping at the bit probably two hours before I actually reached the end of the game.

Those problems aside, it is an *excellent* game. From the wind swept and snow capped peaks in the north, to the dusty high deserts in the south, the environment is gorgeous. The solitude of the wilderness is palpable. The story is exciting and tragic, as the old west should be. The political commentary is relevant to our times. You’ll like it, especially if you’re a fan of the 10th amendment and don’t like the Feds sticking their nose in everyone’s business. Multiplayer can be a lot of fun if you have a posse. The action is great and does a good job of being challenging without being frustrating. The music is subtle and moving. Final impression is, the wild west is dead, and yet will never die. If you think you’ll like this game, you’ll love it. Get it.

Red Dead Redemption – 360
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Great game if you like westerns and grand-theft-auto-style games. My grandfather would’ve loved this game. That is, if he could’ve played a video game. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t even be able to ride a horse, but assuming he were an adept video-game enthusiast and didn’t just drop the controller and fall asleep on the sofa, his love for western stories and cowboys and stuff would’ve probably caused him to have a stroke when he beheld the awesomeness that is Red Dead Redemption. It’s not a perfect game, there are some bugs, the missions, especially the side-quests, get repetitive after a while, but it’s a unique, well thought out, cohesive story that makes you feel like you’re in the wild west for just a little while.

Not bad..Not Great
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Not a bad game but falls short of being a great game or even a very good game. When I play the game I get no feeling of excitement or accomplishment. Just do the task and go on. After about 2 or 3 hours the first time you play this game it will become boring. After that it will become boring within an hour or so. It’s an overly structured game with a fixed path you must follow with few exceptions. Because of this it becomes repetitive which brings out that boring stuff. My suggestion is to rent the game and if you still want it, wait 1 or 2 months and buy at a reduced price or better yet buy it used at even a lower price.

Fun, fun game, but shorter then the typical Rockstar, “Grand Theft Auto” game. Multiplayer is repedative. Once you have played multiplayer you are severly bored after a few hours. I do recommend since it is the ONLY awewsome Western game out there.
